My best friend killed himself (with a .22) in 7th grade. It's now clear he'd been working up to it for years. I told my co-worker to take this all very seriously because kids that age aren't bullshitting about stuff like that. IME.

After yesterday's conversation, the mom broke down and confided in my coworker. I'm told that the father (mom and dad are still together) has never held the boy. WTF.

Hoping and praying for them.

It's so important to emphasize to kids like this that the way they feel is just temporary, but suicide is so permanent. Why are children that young so desperate that they want to take their own life?

Skate's journal, which is horrifying to me (not the action but the need for it). And my co-worker's 3rd grade son came home a few weeks ago and reported that his best friend had gotten really whiny. Last week the friend got corrected in class, not causing trouble, just didn't have the right answer... and later confided that he wanted to die. The son reported that to his mom (my co-worker) who *almost* made a phone call. Yesterday the boy reported that he has everything he needs. .22, ammo... so yes, calls have been made. So now we wait.

So sad, but not new. When I was in college a dorm mate, who seemed anorexic and used to draw pictures that were a cross between Tim Burton and Edward Gorey, closed herself in a crawl space and took pills while her folks were on vacation.
