Lib dems are now resuming talks with the tories. They've obviously spoken with Labour now so this is either to say to the tories, Thanks but no thanks or we're with you. My gut instinct tells me it's going to to be the latter. They are resuming talks as I speak, it's live on bbc news 24.

Oh God, this doesn't look good.

So anyway, think yourselves lucky that you've got your constitution written down. We appear to make it up as we go along.

Frankly I think the British Establishment needs the kind of kick up the arse that Guttenberg and Copernicus did back in the day to received wisdom.

But on reflection such a figure would be unattractive to the LDs, making the prospect of a coalition less likely. Boy, Cleggy really does have both parties by the short'n'curlies.

- has everyone figured out that HJ don't stand entirely shoulder to shoulder on political matters?

I think everyone is getting a bit carried away for now (not about leadership contests but about Lib/Lab pacts).  Let's see how it goes- they could just be holding the Tories to ransom.  I felt a lot more lighthearted at the possibility of Lib/Lab than Lib/Tory though.

He is very intelligent and charismatic - I don't think he will let us down! But Ed Balls would be a disaster - so let's try and keep him out of the picture.

Not sure if I can take the excitement!  Off to the gym now - will dip in later.  What a change from Friday!!

I can understand the Miliband vote but from seeing him on question time and the like I think he lacks what is needed to be leader. Alan johnson would certainly bring that bit of left wing socialism to the party because of his links with the trade unions but there's just something about him i don't like, could be wrong on that though. He's as hard as nails though and will not let some tory get the better of him. I don't think he would be popular with the public though. Andy Burnham is a great arguer, he seems to be real labour, has a bit of the old labour in him. I don't think he will win it mind you, I think they will go for Miliband, the general public will like him but if he's the right leader is another thing.

From The Guardian:

5.45pm: Here's a late afternoon summary.

Gordon Brown has announced that he is going to resign. He said that he did not want to go immediately, but he said that he wanted Labour to have a new leader by the time of the party's autumn conference (ie by September). He accepted that he had to take responsibility for the party's poor election result. His resignation will make it easier for Labour to form a government with the Lib Dems. But he has now made it clear that he is going whether or not Labour remains in office.

Nick Clegg has formally opened negotiations with Labour. This afternoon it became clear that Lib Dem MPs had reservations about the proposed deal with the Tories. Now Gordon Brown has slapped a counter-offer on the table. The Lib Dems could join Labour (and, Brown implied, the Scottish and Welsh nationalists and others) to form a "progressive" alliance. They would just about have a majority.

The Tories have yet to respond. As I write, it is not clear whether this will encourage David Cameron to redouble his efforts to strike a deal with the Lib Dems by offering further compromise – or whether the Tories will conclude that they have been double-crossed by Clegg and that they should think again before forming an alliance with the Lib Dems.

The Labour leadership contest is now officially open. David Miliband is the clear favourite. Ed Balls will certainly be a candidate, and Ed Miliband has not denied reports that he may stand against his brother. Andy Burnham is also seen as someone with an outside chance of winning. There has been speculation about Alistair Darling, Alan Johnson and Harriet Harman replacing Brown, but all three have in the past signalled that they don't want the job.

THEN,  a few moments later Gordon Brown comes out of No 10 and informs the country he is RESIGNING. Looks like the Lab/Lib dem coalition is back on and now favourite to succeed!
Oh yes!
