Rock mix sound quality below Main and Mellow?

Long time listener and supporter. I listen primarily on my home system I've curated for many years. I usually listen to the Mellow mix early in the morning and the Main mix much of the day. Occasionally I switch to the Rock mix but I rarely last more than a track or three because to my ears the audio quality is far below the other streams. I'm listening to the FLAC stream in all cases. I realize a lot of rock music was not so well recorded nor mastered over the decades but I don't believe this is the issue. It sounds like the 'processing' of the Rock stream is different and not in a good way to my well seasoned ears/auditory system.

Anyone else notice this?

I find the recently added tracks are louder than the old ones. It might just be imagination, but they sound more processed too. That might just be a result of the loudness wars but, as I do not have the albums to compare with, I can't be sure. It's a pity Philips didn't make 6dB headroom part of the Red Book spec, rather than just recommend it.

It might be fatigue from listening to rock albums that fell victim to "The Loudness Wars."

Thankfully the industry is mixing and mastering to a new standard: -15dB LUFS.

https://www.soundstagesolo.com...

Anyone attempting to deliver a final track mastered above that level will be unceremoniously crushed (sonically) by the respective streaming services.

Perhaps William can shed some light on his ingest and post-processing workflow for RP, but I suspect it's fairly minimalistic.  There's no specific 'sound' of RP as you'd find in traditional FM broadcast media.  By contrast, fellow Internet broadcaster Rusty Hodge has developed a robust sonic pipeline for SomaFM that is built around a network of Orban audio processors.

I don't find myself reaching for the volume knob too often on either station, but tracks with wide dynamic range sound faithful to the originals on RP.  On SomaFM, Rusty strives for a more even dynamic level across tracks, and within the same track, using a slow compressor.
