Coronavirus killed cash transactions — now we're hoarding it instead

My theory is that the apparent hoarding of $50 bills (aka pineapples because of their bright yellow colour) is because of spending out the cash more slowly. Before covid, I'd go to the bank machine, get out cash that they dole out in $50 increments because $20 doesn't buy you much of anything here, then buy stuff, get change in other denominations, spend some more until it was time to go back to the money store for more. So most of the time I had fewer $50 bills than when I first made my withdrawal.  Now, I go to the bank machine and get money in case I need it, then it sits in my wallet for weeks or months until I need to pay someone like my mechanic who prefers to take cash. For everything else, I pay with my phone or fitbit. So I am effectively hoarding $50 bills.
