Interesting article I thought.  Anyone familiar with Spotify?

The golden age of infinite music

Clockwise from top left: Madonna, Spotify, Lou Reed, CDs
By John Harris

Not long ago, if you wanted music, you had to save up your pocket money, take a trip to the local record shop and lovingly leaf through its racks.

Now, it's almost all free, instant and infinite. And our relationship with music has changed forever.

We all know what the alleged future of music will look like. The record industry will be reduced to a smouldering ruin, the album replaced by endless individual songs and music rendered pretty much worthless by the fact that it's universally free.

Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck announce London O2 Arena gig

Former Yardbirds say it 'seemed natural' to hook up

Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck have announced a joint gig to take place at London's O2 Arena next February.

The duo, who played together in Japan earlier this year, will take to the stage at the O2 Arena on February 13 to each play a retrospective set, followed by a joint performance.

Speaking about the gig, Beck said the two "had a blast" playing together in Japan, while Clapton heaped praise on his friend.

"I've always considered to be one of the finest guitar players around," he said. "He's a friend, a great guy, and a truly gifted musician. We had such a fun time in Japan that it seemed natural to play together again."

Although they never played together in The Yardbirds (Beck replaced Clapton in 1965), the two have remained close friends since the '60s.

Tickets for the O2 Arena gig go on sale on September 28. To check the availability of Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton tickets and get all the latest listings, go to NME.COM/TICKETS now, or call 0871 230 1094.

See Bookingsdirect.com for more information.
If you're on O2 you can get Priority Tickets to The O2 and O2 Academy venues up to 48 hours before they go on general release. Register at o2.co.uk/priority. Terms apply.

Excerpted from article, Diana Krall's hard work for Quiet Nights

It's charming to meet a star who's starstruck. She may have sold 14 million albums but an intimate evening to honour Stevie Wonder at the White House hosted by the First Couple was almost too much for Diana Krall.

And how were Barack and Michelle?

"The two of them are tall, strong, together - a couple who love each other. And we started talking. And I say: ‘Elvis and I . . .' and Barack says: ‘Elvis, he died'.

"‘No, I mean Elvis Costello, my husband.'

"And he says: ‘Really? You've been keeping this under wraps.'

"It was so funny . . . He had no idea we were married."

I'm somewhat surprised that she calles him that. It's not his real name. But I suppose it would be too weird to use two names, one in public and one in private.

Zooey Deschanel, 29, and Death Cab for Cutie singer Ben Gibbard, 33, tied the knot Saturday night near Seattle, her rep tells PEOPLE.

The couple got engaged last year when Gibbard presented Deschanel with a three-carat diamond and platinum Neil Lane ring, a source told PEOPLE at the time.

Deschanel currently stars in (500) Days of Summer. Gibbard also is in the indie band the Postal Service.

As a parade of recharged rock bands try to recapture past glories, former Stone Roses guitarist John Squire has not only refused a reunion, he has turned his back on music completely.

Twenty years ago, he helped make one of Britain's greatest albums, the Stone Roses' debut.

But now, Squire, whose Jackson Pollock-styled album sleeves were as memorable as his signature guitar lines, has devoted himself to visual art.

After 39 years, DJ Casey Kasem does his final weekly countdown of the country's top hits

< sphereit start >

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Casey Kasem has done his final countdown. The 77-year-old DJ told "American Top 20" listeners across the country Saturday that the program would be his last. Kasem launched his weekly countdown of the nation's most popular songs, the "American Top 40," on July 4, 1970. Ryan Seacrest took over the show in 2004, and Kasem went on to host two syndicated spinoffs, the "American Top 20" and "American Top 10." Kasem said he "loved every minute" of his broadcasting career, but that he was leaving the show to "free up time I need to focus on myriad other projects."

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Former Wilco guitarist Jay Bennett died of an overdose of a pain killer, a coroner said Tuesday, and authorities are viewing his death as accidental.

Toxicology tests showed the 45-year-old musician died from an overdose of fentanyl, Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said in a brief news release. The drug is found in patches commonly prescribed to treat chronic pain.

Bennett died May 24 after being found unresponsive in his home in Urbana, 110 miles southwest of Chicago.

In a recent posting on his MySpace page, Bennett wrote that he was getting ready for hip replacement surgery after years of pain.

"As time has passed my mobility has continued to erode, to the extent that, for quite some time now, it has even been difficult to sit at the computer for more than just a few minutes," Bennett wrote in a posting dated April 25.

Members of Bennett's family could not immediately be located for comment. There was no immediate response to an e-mail sent to his record company.

PriCara, a division of Johnson & Johnson, recalled fentanyl patches in February 2008 after discovering that some leaked, causing labored breathing and possible overdose.

There was no immediate indication that Bennett had used such a patch.

Northrup did not return a call from The Associated Press and his office declined to immediately provide a copy of Bennett's autopsy, saying the investigation remains open.

Bennett worked as a sound engineer and played instruments for Wilco from 1994 to 2001.

He sued Wilco lead singer Jeff Tweedy in early May. Bennett claimed he was owed royalties for songs during his seven years with the group.

After learning of Bennett's death Tweedy said Bennett made significant contributions to Wilco and said he would be remembered "as a truly unique and gifted human being."

Bennett was born in the Chicago suburb of Rolling Meadows and graduated from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Chmapaign.

Dengue Fever executes at The Castro with expert precision

Who can really forget the classic Amazonian dinosaur adventure story that is The Lost World? The silent 1920s release paved the way for Hollywood hits like King Kong (a blatant rip off if you ask me, but when it's the same animator, you can't really expect much) with its nearly-defunct stop-motion techniques. You would think with the kind of clout this picture has behind it, The San Francisco International Film Festival would have a hard time finding a showstopper to fit the bill. Wrong.

Enter Los Angeles-based, Cambodian psychedelic-pop stars, Dengue Fever, who played the live score from beginning to end with expert precision. Barely taking even a 15-second break throughout the entire 90-100 minute film, singer, Ch'hom Nimhol's vibrato was in rare form, hitting every note with a strange, dream-like quality. Known for featuring snippets from every genre under the sun, Dengue Fever pulled out all the stops to deliver a score that emphasized full use of their ska and jazz influences. The crowd was clearly pleased with their brass transitions and smooth, flowing catchy beats.

Quite simply, I'm not sure if SFIFF could have picked a more adept band to match the unprecedented weight that comes with a timeless treasure like The Lost World.

Hi All: I just finished recording a new song using the miraculous GarageBand on my computer. The song's pretty good (if I do say so myself). The words came to me at a time when I was writing a book on global warming (we're all gonna DIE!) and I was fooling around with some open tunings and the slide bar on my guitar. You should be able to hear it here.
It's called "It's Getting Hot in Here":
