FREE E-BOOK The Things We Do To Make It Home: A Novel |
“Stunning. . . . Lean and supple, completely persuasive, full of nuanced turns, dead on about how people try to bind and repel each other at the same time.”—New York Times Book Review |
Beverly Gologorsky writes about working people, the working poor or middle class and downwardly mobile, people who earn less today than they would have, at the same jobs, fifty years ago, hardworking people. Since this is arguably the largest segment of the US population, it’s funny that Beverly’s subject is one few fiction writers today seem interested in. She writes of the dignity and sometimes the triumphs of the people inhabiting her novels, sometimes of their humiliations and often of the impossible choices they face. Privilege and success aren’t worthy subjects for her, no more than they ever were for Nelson Algren. The stories Algren and Gologorsky tell are far more interesting. On the occasion of the release of Gologorsky’s third novel, Every Body Has a Story, from our friends at Haymarket Books, here is a free e-book of her first novel, The Things We Do to Make It Home, a New York Times Notable Book and Los Angeles Times Best Fiction Book, the story of the wives and families of Vietnam Vets—poor and middle class working families, needless to say, send a disproportionate percentage of their young men into military service. The book is a revelation, an evocation of some of the ways that wars never end, and the true meaning of the expression “the war at home.” I believe that over the course of a reader’s life, one of the great joys is to build a relationship with a writer’s work over the course of their career, across many books. Readers of her first two novels, The Things We Do to Make It Home and Stop Here, will rejoice in the arrival of Gologorsky’s latest, Every Body Has a Story. —Dan Simon |

You have to get over that Columbia House thing. It was practically impossible to get rid of those Three Dog Night and Art Garfunkel solo albums that kept showing up.

CG and I restarted our deliveries with a similar service - BlueApron.com It's stupid easy to check the planned menu deliveries, skip it if you don't like it. What they do send is often enough for three people, sometimes even providing leftovers. And easy directions means even the teenage boy can cook for us.

Sort of. You have to sign up, and then cancel if you don't like it. I just double checked and it's actually a free box, which is 3 meals ($69). I would recommend signing up for the free box then pausing the next shipment to be sure you like it. They prep and ship weekly, so you are commited by the time you finish the box. But i beleive shipping is included, so you are only out your time and e-mail, and a reminder to cancel if you don't want it. I kind of think they should offer a 1-week non-recurring option. There are times it would be great but subscriptions and me don't get along.

I'm having some issues with their logistics (packaging) and occasionally getting some stuff that is borderline on freshness (ironic) or frozen (bad for radishes). But overall it's a good service and not too much of a premium for what you get. It makes meal planning dead simple. I have 3 codes that will let you get one of their meals for free. I've been using ON-1 which works kind of the same way and was pretty inexpensive. They are releasing their own RAW processors which they claim is better than bread. ETA: Seems like ON-1 isn't as klugy for stand alone use.
