So you aren't looking for acid jazz but for the stuff that came before it like Herbie Hancock, Weather Report, soul jazz, etc?

Herbie Hancock with the Miles Davis Quintet or maybe some of his later stuff.  He really did develop his own rythmic form of jazz.  Funkie, melodic.   His jazz album "River: The Joni Letters" won a Grammy, only the 2nd jazz album to do so.

I guess I've always just thought of it as "jazz" and have never really categorized jazz's different forms in my mind

If there are elements of Blues in acid jazz, maybe Billie Holiday, Louie Armstrong might have helped found it.  If you incorporate swing with jazz you get Duke Ellington.

What makes acid jazz different from other jazz?

Especially Freakpower is fun, and Galliano is straight Curtis Mayfield (Fred Is Dead)
As you see it also has Corduroy, and all these are "Acid Jazz" a British label I think.
Jamiroquai comes pretty close too

Edie (Swing Out Sister - GREAT band! - love their second album especially)  and Hairfarmer both also have great suggestions...

Ok, there was a revival of sorts back in the 90s and it was called "Acid Jazz".  Can anyone clue me in on some of the original artists of this genere?  I'm a big fan of Cordoroy (http://www.corduroy.co.uk/) and would love more stuff along these lines.

Thanks!

Would Isaac Hayes, with his "Shaft" song, be considered one of them?

Maybe Donny Osmond?

First, totally confused me with the title.  Second, it seems that I didn't realize what acid jazz is.  I was going to mention a few groups but it turns out that they aren't listed as acid jazz but others - which are also favorites - are.  I own 5 Swing Out Sister CDs but wouldn't have thought of them as acid jazz - however I found them listed as such so what do I know?  Incognito - who doesn't like Bluey?  Koop.

When I think of "Acid Jazz" I think of folks like:

Brooklyn Funk Essentials
The Brand New Heavies
Count Basic
Cleveland Lounge
Beat Club 21
Erykah Badu's first album is pretty Acid Jazzy but her subsequent albums have been more Hip Hop/Funkadelic influanced
