I think that the Republicans have done an excellent job in making the focus of their agenda a social one, as opposed to an economic one, which has led to them being the party of choice in many parts of the country and within many specific groups. This is especially true with "hot-button" social questions, such as gay marriage, abortion, gun control, etc. I am a life-long Southerner, and I can attest that you'll get a lot of votes your way if you say you're against two guys marrying, or if you threaten that the other side is going to take away everyone's guns. (I don't personally agree with these opinions, and am that rare breed of southerner who's more liberal than conservative on most issues, but I'm in the minority).

Add to that the Republicans' ability to combine their national platform (at least, in terms of social issues) to the Christian Church, and you have an even larger built-in voter base. It would be interesting to see a poll that asked everyone why they vote for the party they choose to vote for, and then compare the reasons to see if they're based on social, economic, or other issues. I think that many people on both sides of the fence probably vote now based more on social beliefs (based on religion or otherwise) than they do economic principles.

A well-considered view. Thanks.

Every human is guilty of lies and hypocrisy. But the Republicans have mastered it to an artform. How else could they get so many votes from the middle class when they really represent the interests of the wealthy top 2%??
