Add to that the Republicans' ability to combine their national platform (at least, in terms of social issues) to the Christian Church, and you have an even larger built-in voter base. It would be interesting to see a poll that asked everyone why they vote for the party they choose to vote for, and then compare the reasons to see if they're based on social, economic, or other issues. I think that many people on both sides of the fence probably vote now based more on social beliefs (based on religion or otherwise) than they do economic principles.
