The Garrard company had been around since about 1721 as jewelers and later made range finders for artillery. After WWI they started making spring motor gramophones. They moved from the UK to Brazil in the late 70's and went into decline and tried to get into the video business but went under in '92. Someone else uses the name Garrard for their audio company now but it has nothing to do with the old company.

That reminds me of my Dads first 33&1/3 capable turntable that he bought in '49 when long play microgroove records first came out. Its a Garrard RC80 I still have it including the accessories, manual and original box from '49
