The Condition: 5 Waiting
Judgement: Waiting. If you are sincere, you have light and success. Perseverance brings good fortune. It furthers one to cross the great water.
Image: Clouds rise up to Heaven: the image of Waiting. Thus the superior person eats and drinks, is joyous and of good cheer.
Line 5: Nine in the Fifth place means (peace) — Waiting at meat and drink. Perseverance brings good fortune.
Line 4: Six in the Fourth place means (resoluteness) — Waiting in blood. Get out of the pit.

It is necessary that those who take to task dangerous enterprises are honest with themselves and resolute; without compromise. In this, waiting means one is certain of achieving one's goal, but it will take time for everything to fall into place. One must be prepared for danger and thus be of good cheer, eating, drinking, and resting up for the trials that must surely come. The rain will come, do not interfere with things until the time is right. One should simply do what needs to be done and wait for the time of action.

It is not possible to achieve everything at once. Many battles must be fought with times of peace intervening. A wise person will use peaceful times to strengthen body and spirit and prepare for the next battle... while bearing in mind the ultimate goal. Rest is important to maintaining strength and a clear path of objectivity.

One faces an extremely dangerous situation; a matter of life and death! It seems that loss of blood is imminent. It's like being in a pit... what can be done? All that can be done is to stand firm and let fate take it's course. Otherwise one might bury oneself prematurely through rash actions. One must wait, remain composed, bear the goal of getting out of the pit in mind... and then a plan will follow as the truth becomes evident.

11 Peace
Judgement: Peace. The small departs, the great approaches. Good fortune. Success.
Image: Heaven and Earth unite: the image of Peace. Thus the ruler divides and completes the course of Heaven and Earth; S/he furthers and regulates the gifts of Heaven and Earth, and so aids the people.
Line 5: Six in the Fifth place means (waiting) — The sovereign I gives his daughter in marriage. This brings blessing and supreme good fortune.

A time of peace comes when the high is in harmony with the low. This can mean a time of social harmony among people. Those in positions of power show respect to those below because those below are being respectable. It is the end of feuds; a time to work together to achieve something important of lasting effect. Goodness is in control and evil, being under it's influence, has little choice but to comply. Peace is a time of universal prosperity and opportunity for rallying one's forces to defend against future ill. Through the proper maintenance and regulation of resources, resources remain available in the future.

A modest union of high and low brings prosperity to both.

Judgement: Break-Through. One must resolutely make the matter known at the court of the king. It must be announced truthfully. Danger. It is necessary to notify ones own city. It does not further one to resort to arms. It furthers one to undertake something.
Image: The lake has risen up to Heaven: the image of Break-Through. Thus superior people dispense riches downward and refrain from resting on their virtue.
Line 4: Nine in the Fourth place means (waiting) — There is no skin on his thighs and walking comes hard. If one were to let oneself be led like a sheep remorse would disappear. But if these words are heard they will not be believed.

When an inferior person occupies a position of power, the corruption is sufficient to oppress the actions of superior people. Passion and reason do not mix... one may need to fight corruption in oneself to achieve a noble goal. In a fight between good and evil one must be resolute; a compromise with evil is not possible... evil must be openly discredited under all circumstances! The struggle cannot be undertaken directly by force. When evil is challenged directly, it resorts to weapons... and if we become entangled in one battle after another, we lose our objectivity in passion and hatred. Thus it important to begin with oneself, and banish those faults we have identified as wrong. The best way to fight evil is by furthering goodness. One must be careful not to be obstinate; a tree that does not bend in a storm may be broken. Be weary of greed; spread the wealth... and grow through a process of continual self-examination and gentle adjustments.

An inner restlessness forbids one to find peace. One wishes to push on, under any circumstance, but encounters irreconcilable obstacles. One becomes weakened by the inner conflict; obstinacy and trying to force the situation through wilfulness. Letting go of ego and learning to relax; to let things take their course, would allow things to work themselves out. But such advice will not be believed, because obstinacy and arrogance are passions that make one deaf to wise counsel.

Judgement: The Power of the Great. Perseverance furthers.
Image: Thunder in heaven above: the image of power of the great. Thus superior people do not tread upon paths that do not accord with the established order.
Line 5: Six in the Fifth place means (resoluteness) — Loses the goat with ease. No remorse.
Line 4: Nine in the Fourth place means (peace) — Perseverance brings good fortune. Remorse disappears. The hedge opens; there is no entanglement. Power depends upon the axle of a big cart.

It is a time when inner worth brings itself to bear and becomes powerful. But one must be very careful not to go too far, or one might rely on strength alone, and fail to ask what is right and wrong. Also, being intent on action, one might not allow fate to resolve itself; it is sometimes important just to wait and see... or just to wait for the right time to act. One must resolutely combine conduct and correctness to succeed in profound undertakings... this is the Power of the Great. It is important that one observe Nature and understand causes and effects; understand what fails and what succeeds... and avoid opposing Nature's ways. This requires remaining open to the truth and avoiding the passions of arrogance and stubbornness, hardening personal bias and the urge to force changes.

Give up stubbornness and belligerence without regrets. The situation is such that a light hand will achieve success. Heavy-handedness will only make the situation difficult.

Quietly and persistently work toward the removal of obstructions and success will come in the end. Excessive use of power could cause entanglements. Great loads may be moved with simple machines... modest methods.
