studied how to shoot duotones and then how to do duotones in Photoshop with spot channels and then asked why in the hell anyone still runs duotones instead of full color in a CMYK magazine...
It is kind of funny to think about how duotones were so common that we had to make them long after going digital, because people just liked the look of them. Now we have Instagram filters to get that crappy look.
I remember doing duotones with overlays - often cutting rubyliths. It was mostly spot color for pretty boring catalog work or instruction booklets, or (on a good day) duo-fold and half-fold brochures. I've done some with graphics software for my own purposes, often to try to simulate a two-color painting before I actually start painting it - that's more fun.
