I like it too now that I have listened to the whole thing. I thought her voice was too strident near the beginning, but she fixed that just after the point I had clicked out.

The first video below (part I of an excellent 4 part BBC series) gives a good overview of the story of how Appalachian folks such as Clarence Ashley (from miamizsun's video) came "down from the mountain" with songs from their British/Celtic heritage and found their way into American popular music. Ashley's story about going to New York to record may refer to an encounter with Ralph Peer of Victor Records, who is credited with cutting the first Country tune in the 1920s (see second embedded video below) and actively sought out traditional artists to record both in studio and in the field. Peer then went on to make the historic recordings in Bristol VA in 1927 that are considered the genesis of what is now called "Country" music.
