Well shit happens.  Just got the call ... our unvaccinated coworker just tested positive.

We just finished scheduling rapid tests for tomorrow at CVS.  This will be my second exposure, the first being from my buddy that stayed with us in what turned out to be his final days before passing.  Nothing happened then, didn't bother testing since circumstances were pretty much known after the fact anyway.  Just stayed home for a couple of days to be safe.

And no the woman is not a Trump supporter.  She is in fact a Russian immigrant that came here in the late 80's when the Jews were allowed to leave Russia.  She worked with us some 20 years ago and just came back a couple of months ago.

Glad I'm not in Australia right now.

Interesting.  I could not imagine the staid Economist writing We're #1!  We're #1! on the chart as well as annotating policy shifts as done.

Turns out this chart was annotated by somebody over on nakedcapitalism.com.

The 'Them' are other rich western countries which are supposed to be close friends and allies.   Allies include armed neutral nations like Sweden, Finland and Switzerland.

But yeah.... kinda embarrassing no doubt.  Unfortunately, I doubt Trump voters and other anti-vaxxers read The Economist or nakedcapitalism.com.

Optimistically, the number of US excess deaths should trend down over the next couple of months.  At least until after the Solstice/Christmas/New Years holidays.

And one more note to add regarding the fully vaccinated. On Tuesday when initially I started this post, the lady I work with at that store told me that she had a friend who was double vaxed, caught it and just died. She was in her early 50's. Drives home that fully vaxed just means that you are fully vaxed.

Life does not come with any guarantees. When it is your time to go, it is your time to go.

What kind of health was your colleague in?   Did she run?  Did she swim laps at the pool 3 to 5 times a week?  Rock climber?  Backpacker?   Cyclist?

Indeed there is much uncertainty in life.   Would that explain the broad multi-partisan support in North America for obesity-sitting-dementia policies?  Or is the thinking that God created opioids so the Children of God could trash the Temple of the Soul without worry?

The Trolley Problem and Vaccinating Young People Against COVID-19
The harms we cause often lead to more grief than the harms we fail to prevent. Is this why some doctors are willing to leave young people vulnerable to a deadly virus?
Death from COVID-19 is worse than myocarditis from the vaccine. Though this seems like an uncontroversial statement, intelligent doctors from prestigious universities have penned articles opining that it is preferable to leave young people vulnerable to the virus. While some doctors are clearly motivated by reflexive contrarianism and the media appearances that brings, I suspect that this viewpoint is partially explained by a quirk in how we perceive risk, specifically our tendency to view risks of omission differently from risks of commission. Put another way, we regret harms we actively cause more than those we passively fail to prevent. (...)

According the CDC’s COVID Data Tracker, 650 children and 3,643 adults age 18-29 have died of COVID-19 in the USA. The American Academy of Pediatrics has added 185 deaths to its tally since July 1st, including many teenagers who were old enough to receive the vaccine. After hundreds of millions, perhaps billions of doses, I am aware of eight possible deaths from the mRNA vaccines (here, here, here, and here) in the entire world and even these were mostly, if not exclusively, in adults. Though I’ve consistently argued that vaccine-myocarditis should not be trivialized, the virus is clearly more dangerous than the vaccine. Seat belts too can severely harm people, though these injuries are rightly considered mild compared to the injuries they prevent. As with seat belts, there is no rational reason to treat harms caused by the vaccine as categorically worse than harms caused by the virus. (...)

His feathers are ruffled about certain aspects about how we are getting from point A to point B but there has been nothing in our lifetime that compares to what we are dealing with on a global scale so show me the country, administration, people that had this thing nailed/handled from the start and I’m all for following their lead. Otherwise don’t be surprised when the pandemic response isn’t as smooth as you would like it to be.

Additionally, he seemed surprised about the need for booster shots. I think he needs to get better informed but pretty close to the time that the first shots were being offered most people already knew that booster shots would likely be needed because that had already been communicated by the pharma companies. This isn’t a new wrinkle by any means.
