Here we are being told, "Feel sick? Get a COVID test." My boss got tested even though he was sure he caught a cold from his mother who tested negative. Masks are now recommended in Melbourne, but not required, even on public transport. I don't know how you deal with young people and the general wankers who act immortal and self-centred. Just keep on message, I guess.

Florida sets new state daily case record of 15,299
Florida has registered a state record of 15,299 new coronavirus cases in 24 hours - around a quarter of all of the United States' daily infections.

The state, with just 7% of the US population, surpassed the previous daily record held by California.

Florida, which began lifting coronavirus restrictions in May, has proved vulnerable due to tourism and an elderly population.

Its figures eclipse the worst daily rates seen in New York in April.

Florida also registered an additional 45 deaths.

The state would rank fourth in the world for new cases if it were a country, according to a Reuters analysis. More than 40 hospitals in Florida say their intensive care facilities are at full capacity.

"Coronavirus numbers are looking MUCH better, going down almost everywhere. Big progress being made!"

~ Donald Trump, July 6 2020

Phoenix and some Texas counties are ordering morgue trucks, as the number of COVID-19 cases in the states move into the next chilling phase: an overwhelming death toll.

Even as Arizona county morgues are reaching capacity, White House officials insisted to Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego recently that everything is under control and that she’s being too demanding of them, she told a local TV station on Friday.

“I’m heartbroken ... It’s been a rough week for me,” Gallego said. “We are losing too many Arizonans.”

Aw it's easy, I have no problem with it.   I wrote in here when the pandemic first started when everyone was complaining about policy, politics and what Trump was doing was that if you follow your direction from the government on how to respond to the pandemic and not health officials around the world who literally had microphones and cameras in their faces perpetually since day one then God bless and good luck.   Politics and pandemics do not mix, there is only educated experts and common sense of how the world works around us.   If someone is so engrossed by the political partisan propaganda program and sees everything through the prism of the party (I am on a letter P roll here) that they think the answers come from politicians well then, as we in the south say; "Well, bless their little hearts."

And furthermore those that fit this description are not noted for their comprehension and listening skills when confronted by non political language and are a waste of time.  Self reliance is the future.

My point perhaps was not clear. I would like to be able to at least be able to obtain information from the FDA, CDC, NIH without having to wonder whether it has been influenced by politics.

Of course, I do also read articles by and watch interviews of non-governmental scientists.

I think you are sounding more the issue of whether FDA should have the authority to approve or disapprove the use of drugs. A bigger topic and discussion.

My understanding (limited as it may be) is that the FDA rescinded its  emergency use authorization for hydroxychloroquine for treatment of Covid-19. The FDA apparently did so based on 3 randomized studies that did not show it to be effective. The study out of Detroit apparently was not randomized.

It  also is my understanding that doctors can still prescribe it for patients because it is approved for other treatment uses and that some doctors are still prescribing it for Covid-19 treatment? Not sure how this all settles out.

My objection is to non-medical people — like Navarro, and Trump for that matter — giving their opinions even when those opinions are inconsistent with those of the medical professionals within the administration. That makes no sense to me. And it casts doubts upon the credibility of the scientific information being disseminated by the government during a nationalA  public health crisis.  If we have a FDA and a CDC and a NIH, I want to be able to believe that the information those agencies are disseminating constitute their best medical judgments based on scientific evidence and protocols. I do not want to have to be concerned with whether political pressures are being brought that would hamper those agencies and dilute or even distort their messages to the public.

So, right now, I am having a hard time putting politics and the specter of political influence on what should be solely a matter for scientists and medical personnel, to the side.

One might wonder why Peter Navarro, a trade and economic adviser, is a point person on a campaign to get the FDA to reverse its position on emergency use of hydroxychloroquine to treat Covid-19. From today’s Washington Post

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro is leading a Trump administration effort to demand the Food and Drug Administration reverse course and grant a second emergency authorization for the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine to treat covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

Navarro, armed with a new study that he says shows the drug’s effectiveness, is being cheered on by President Trump, who has long touted the drug as a “game changer” and even used it himself as a possible preventive measure. Trump praised the study on Twitter this week, urging the FDA to “Act Now.” The campaign also has been promoted by Rudolph W. Giuliani, the president’s lawyer, and Laura Ingraham’s show on Fox News.

But Navarro, an economist known more for his aggressive approach to trade issues and China policy than for his medical credentials, faces serious challenges as he denounces what he calls “media-induced hydroxy hysteria.” Scientists have widely criticized the new study, by Detroit’s Henry Ford Health System, as flawed. In addition, just weeks ago the FDA revoked its emergency authorization for hydroxychloroquine after major studies found the medication wasn’t effective for covid-19. And the unexpected revival of a politically fraught issue comes as FDA Commissioner Stephen M. Hahn tries to shake off criticism he sometimes seems overly deferential to Trump.

Seems to me this is a microcosm of why our response  to the virus is faltering/failing.
