the swedes aren't idiots, but they didn't do what other people thought they should do

so they're in political thought jail

as i understand it, they have very large care homes vs their neighbors

the virus hit them early so the damage was done

at that point they made a measured response/decision to play the long game

but we can still sit on our high horses and pick them apart...for now

I have no opinions because I like virtually everyone else in the world have no idea what is really going on, but here are some interesting facts:

How Many People in the U.S. Are Hospitalized With COVID-19? Who Knows?
The Trump administration told hospitals to stop reporting data to the CDC, and report it to HHS instead. Vice President Mike Pence said the information would continue to be released publicly. It hasn’t worked out as promised.

My problem with influenza vaccinations is that they are not very effective.  Well, more effective than modern marriage (~60% > ~50%).

Influenza vaccination and respiratory virus interference among Department of Defense personnel during the 2017–2018 influenza season

Receiving influenza vaccination may increase the risk of other respiratory viruses, a phenomenon known as virus interference. Test-negative study designs are often utilized to calculate influenza vaccine effectiveness. The virus interference phenomenon goes against the basic assumption of the test-negative vaccine effectiveness study that vaccination does not change the risk of infection with other respiratory illness, thus potentially biasing vaccine effectiveness results in the positive direction.

The author, in an attempt to ward off antivaxxers weaponizing this study, published a letter to the editor in that journal clarifying the implications of the study to COVID-19 (emphasis mine):

On 10 January 2020, Greg Wolff published a study examining if seasonal influenza vaccination was associated with an increased odds of becoming infected with a respiratory virus other than influenza, a phenomenon known as virus interference https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0264410X19313647).

Influenza vaccination data and viral respiratory laboratory results were obtained for the 2017–2018 influenza season. While the study found no association with influenza vaccination and overall risk of becoming infected with other respiratory viruses (slight decrease in odds was observed), when examining the association with influenza vaccination and the risk of becoming infected with specific viruses at the individual level, there were two viruses that showed significantly increased odds (endemic coronavirus and human metapneumovirus).

Coronavirus results in this study represented the four endemic, regularly circulating strains of coronavirus (229E, NL63, OC43, and HKU1) during the 2017–2018 influenza season, not novel coronavirus (COVID-19)
. The four circulating strains of coronavirus have existed in the general population for years, first identified in the mid-1960s. At the time of the study, and even at the time of initial electronic publication, COVID-19 was not yet in existence.

Established levels of immunity in the general population for the four circulating strains of coronavirus at the time of the study when compared to lack of immunity for the novel COVID-19 strain make any sort of correlation between vaccination and COVID-19 invalid.

Therefore, the results of this study cannot and should not be interpreted to represent any sort of relationship or association of influenza vaccination receipt and COVID-19 illness. Results from this study DO NOT support the anti-vaccination viewpoint of avoiding seasonal influenza vaccination, and in fact should be interpreted in the opposite manner, since significant protection against influenza was associated with vaccination receipt, and a slight decrease in the odds of infection from other respiratory viruses was also noted.

Results from this study should not be applied to or interpreted with COVID-19 in any way.

By the same token, wearing mask can be seen as an excuse not to social distance in a prudent manner meaning to only be around people if you absolutely have to.  That is what I worry about regarding the relatively new (to the western world anyway) "revelation" that mask should be worn and the obsession with them.  Are there people using mask as an excuse for otherwise unwise behavior regarding the virus and social distancing?  Better believe it.  How many people that are around large groups of people for long periods of time in the heat wear the mask 100 percent of the time they are in these conditions?  Not many.

I'm not so sure there are very many people in close proximity to large groups of people for long periods of time these days.  In stores I've been to all the employees wear their masks when they're among other people.  I've seen some walk off to the side, away from others, to take it off for a while or go off to the side of the loading dock or parking lot to smoke or something.  Then again, it's not like I go to stores as often as I used to and I don't really observe the employees the whole time.  But as you've probably noticed, it's been a little on the warm side for the last few weeks in our section of the country so there is that reason why some may not wear their masks all the time.  I've seen guys doing construction, roadwork. and landscaping who pull their masks down when their not close to other people.  Even then, those aren't usually large groups - generally 3-5 guys.

It's all about shifting the odds. Social distancing, masks, washing your hands... If someone pulls their mask down now and then, it is better than never wearing it. If they pull it down where they aren't distancing, it's not good. If they never pull it up, it's bad.

Masks will be mandatory in public here, as of tomorrow. They have been in Melbourne for a few weeks. There are pesky clusters popping up and the state, with a population of 6.4 million (almost all in Melbourne) had 627 new cases. So like 10/100,000 population compared to Florida's 47/100,000. But who's counting? It is way too many. Our state borders are closed to non-essential travel. It is going to be a while before we get things stabilized.

I find I have a tendency to want to get too close when I talk to people while wearing  a mask because I feel like they can't understand me.
