San Antonio, TX: Officials became aware of a woman from Wuhan, one of those quarantined on the Cruise and evacuated to one of six Military Installations in the U.S., Lackland A.F.B. tested positive once, then twice negative. She was released from quarantine before her fourth test came up positive. She stayed at a hotel near the airport and visited a mall within blocks. Ate at the food court and went back to her hotel. The county has been declared a local state of disaster and public health emergency. Growing distrust of how this is being handled, a rushed evac of the 12 that have tested positive at Lackland is rallying now.
I knew the shite would get real, just didn't think it'd be this soon. Shut downs and supply chains are still scarier than the virus itself.
Thanks for this, Dave. Very timely & necessary to get more information & perspective.
NYT is reporting that exact scenario in China. Cancer patients can't get chemo, for example. Non-coronavirus patients have already died waiting for treatment. Blood supplies are critically low, due to demand and to fears of cross-contamination. There's a suggestion there could be as many, or more, non-virus deaths than virus deaths, due to lack of treatment.
We like to imagine our system is superior, but right now I have little confidence. If coronavirus patients overwhelm the resources, how do you decide who gets treatment? If coronavirus-control takes precedence (to reduce its spread), other patients will die from all the other treatable things people can die from. If you treat those patients, the coronavirus could continue to spread. Even at less than 2% mortality rate, that's hundreds of thousands of deaths.
Damned if you do, damned if you don't. I think tonight's a good time to open a good single malt... c.
I think the best system to handle potential pandemics like these is the one that doesn't exist.

I don't like the violent subtext, but I'm open to the concept of strange women lying in ponds distributing swords. It's certainly no worse than letting Iowa set the tone.
Because my wife is in chemotherapy and therefore has a compromised immune system, I just ordered some N95 masks, just in case things do get dodgy. Better to have it and not need it...
Personally I would go with P100 filter masks but then I use them all the time while doing woodwork and auto wrenching.
The US economy is about to take a hit but overall I reckon the health system should protect Americans. Some other countries with fewer resources and even stupider politics will not make out as well.
for decades these clowns have failed to negotiate/build the peace and balance a budget
outright baldfaced pie-in-the-storytelling backed up with unicorn dust
stop trying/promising to do everything for everyone to bribe voters
maybe get the basics down first before trying to set up the matrix
introduce a little reason and logic up in that hizzle
political bs is no way to organize and run society
peace

A friend from Taiwan reported that he was delayed on his way to work because his coffee cup set off the fever monitor. They are scanning everyone as they enter the subway system.
Australia doesn't seem very proactive or prepared, but the government is invoking emergency powers if needed to quarantine people. Can't remember if I told you or not, but a green grocer in town was closed for a month - he went to China for a couple of weeks and was asked to self-quarantine for two more weeks when he got back, even though he wasn't near the outbreak. That is really hard on a business. It was great to see the other customers welcoming him back and checking that he was ok.
I am seeing people from Seattle tweet that they can't get tested for COVID even if the have all the symptoms. Then they have to decide whether to stay home or possibly infect others. Hard decision when you don't get any sick leave. I don't know how the US will manage if the worst case scenarios for transmission happen.
We will continue to not be responsible as individuals and do the prudent things we should to curb the spread and then blame anyone who does not agree with our political views on why it is getting so bad. It is the American way.

You know when he's sitting there with his arms crossed, he doesn't know shit about shit. (Oh, wait, hahahaha, I misspoke. He knows even less than he usually knows, which is shit about shit.)
The scariest thing about that clip when he asks about using the flu vaccine for Corona is at the very end. After getting the very quick, very clear answer from across the table...NO...someone on his side of the table throws in an "it probably wouldn't work...." in a clear attempt to cast at least the slightest possibility and to cover the stupidity of the President, making him feel better about one of the dumbest questions possible.

Yes AliGator, such a creative name, speaks for me.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesusâ@DrTedrosKnowing & understanding an epidemic is the first step to defeating it. We are in unchartered territory with #COVID19. We have never before seen a respiratory pathogen that is capable of community transmission, but which can also be contained with the right measures.
