Actually I've only made the hajj the required once this year for the first time since I was still working.  As you probably noticed Bob, who is my go to driver, can't take the heat anymore.  This just started after he got heat stroke playing tennis last year.  I may have to limit my bleacher visits to April and September in the future and start slummin' it in the main stands in July.  We both thought too it might be a good year to cut back a little in a vain attempt to send a small message to management, but I had intended to pick it up a bit by now.  The trade deadline took a lot out of me.  Even though I knew it was coming and l was the best thing to do long term for the team the scale and speed of it was breathtaking.  It didn't help that Contreras went on the IL at the same time.  That entire defensively amazing infield that we've grown to love so much over the last five years gone in an instant.  It took a while for the shock to wear off.   I've amended my ancient Cubs fan survey question to "Which was hardest on you?  1969, 2013, or trade deadline 2021".  My brothers were out the season pinned down by job and wife's knee replacement.  I think you know which one I consider a valid excuse.  I should have figured some way to get to Oracle Park this year and I can't even come with an excuse as lame as work.  At any rate I may get to one more this year with a neighbor just because it's the Cards.  It may not come off either though for the same lame excuse as my kid brother.

{#Yes}  I think he has become my favorite color man of all time even though I probably learned more baseball from Steve Stone than anyone other than my dad.  I think my favorite JD line still might be from his very first Cubs broadcast which I've told a couple of times here.  I liked him right away.

Ooh. Very good.

Yeah it didn't take Roberts long to figure out how to work the rules to his advantage. I think there were 8 intentional walks last night. Obviously the visiting team should never allow a good hitter to hit if there's a base open but as long as there's a loophole, Roberts will be the first to exploit it. I'm not complaining, really, about that (the Manfred Man is an all-purpose complaint) because I thought it was fun in a weird way to see 3B Justin Turner make several putouts in shallow Right.

What's left of the Cubbies managed to take 10 innings to lose the second game of the double header last night to thwart the silly 7 inning shaft imposed by a commissioner who so obviously hates baseball.  It did however involve way too much of that runner starting at second nonsense.  A couple of weeks ago in one of the very few entertaining things there have been on a Cubs broadcast since the trade deadline there was a discussion on just what one should call the runner given the free pass.  "Ghost runner" and "phantom runner"  seemed to be common, but not very well liked.  I personally generally go with "abomination from hell" or "dumbest thing since the designated hitter".  In the end though they decided that the best suitable for mixed company term would be "Manfred man".

Fell asleep listening to the Doyers/Padres game last night. 1-0 Padres into the 8th, Doyers hit a solo HR to send it to extras... woke up at some point to hear that the Padres had been no-hit for 9 innings. Dave Roberts was walking any good hitter in extras because a single would lose the game, so he dodged a few hits there, maybe. A couple of WOW errors including the Padres forgetting to double-switch so the pitcher's spot came up to bat. 15th inning both teams scored 2! Then the Doyers put it away in the 16th.

Those two teams really have had the most epic games this year.

In the would-be-interesting-if-it-happened-but-it-didn't-but-I-already-wrote-the-article department:

The Giants almost won last night's game while not scoring for 24(x) consecutive outs. They got a 2-run homer to lead off the 1st, then Marcus Strohman settled down and dominated them, only broken up by Longo's solo HR late in the game.

No-hitters make me cry. There were some really hard-hit balls and great defensive plays to keep it intact.

It's kind of interesting that (it seems like) a lot of no-hitters are thrown by guys who aren't well known, and then they fade a bit as whatever bit of magic they have becomes familiar. So when we see a new guy go 8-2/3, you know that's probably the closest they'll ever get. I'm glad he got this one done.
