So I put a simple mailto: link on our website and everyone in the company gets a blank page instead of having it open their email app. Works fine on mac, Chrome and Safari, my iPhone. I tested on one guy's machine and if I switch his default mail app to not-Chrome, it works as expected. So I assume that the company machines' windows chrome is interfering and that outside the company, a Windows Chrome user who clicks the link will have no problem.

Will someone who uses Windows, and Chrome browser, and Chrome is the default mail app please click the "Farmers Market" email link at the end of the paragraph on this page? If it opens to a blank black page, I have a problem. If it works as expected I'll relax.

There's no need to actually send an email! As long as it opens up the app correctly, we're good.

blank page
link in the browser: mailto:farmersmarket@yellowstonemotors.com

Finally got around to testing it on my home PC. The link does nothing if you click on it with Gmail within Chrome as the default email app. Any other mail app (Outlook, Windows Mail, Gmail, etc.) works just fine.

Ah yes. But using Chrome (not a separate app set to read your gmail) so it should just open a new tab in Chrome with the "new message" screen ready to go. So I'm 100% (rounding error) certain that the link is fine. The question is do all windows/chrome setups experience the same error when a mailto link is clicked? I see a lot of similar questions on the innertubes so ...testing testing.

My desktop opens the Windows/Outlook app when I click that link but I've never set up any default email for my machine - Outlook asks me to when it opens. I access my emails through a browser on my computer. But it seems that the link does what it's supposed to do - look for a default email.  I'll test it out on my tablet - I have a default email set up on that.

It opens up Outlook on my Win 7 Pro OS on my desktop using the Chrome browser.  While I use Gmail, it is not my default. I have no default mail set in Chrome. I still have Explorer installed but never use it and I'll guess that Outlook from my 2003 XP Office suite is somehow set as the default, even though I never, ever use it.

if you wanna simplify the email a bit, you can add the subject to the link by adding to the "mail to" link like this...

mailto:farmersmarket@yellowstonemotors.com?subject=reservations

Good idea but this is a corporate website manager (like Wix kinda) and that extraneous stuff gets stripped out. I just tried it again and it's gone again. Doesn't let me do much at all. Which is good; I don't want to be a webmonkey.

Even on a Windows machine, the link works fine if the default reader is anything other than Gmail IN Chrome. But I think that's a pretty common arrangement among gmail users so I just need to know if I need to come up with a workaround for them.
