whee! i finally found a thread where people are celebrating....or....at least, they were earlier... it seems that, at the moment, i am alone in my need to celebrate mardi gras....

tried to make my own hurricane, but the store i stopped at didn't have the passionflower juice/syrup. dammit.

just like every year, someone brought paczki to work! but i've never actually eaten king cake. no one in the suburbs sells them, that i have found.

and, i wore purple cords and a green shirt to work...no gold, though.

Just like the King Cake tradition, pancakes are served for supper as a way to use up butter and lard and tasty tasty bacon, things that would otherwise spoil over the next 40 days.

Our church does a free dinner for anyone who wants to come, we usually serve 60–75 people and they usually leave money on the table... we send a couple hundred dollars to the Cathedral Home for Children in Laramie.

very pragmatic, and love the hair.   wonder if there is something like that before passover.  except for that meal right before...  I don't know.  brain not working so well about these things.  maybe.

Yep. The cakes have a small trinket (often a small plastic baby, sometimes said to represent Baby Jesus) inside, and the person who gets the piece of cake with the trinket has various privileges and obligations. The person who gets the trinket is declared the King or Queen of the day. Sometimes there are separate cakes to select the males and females; the one for women is sometimes called a Loomis Cake. The king or queen is usually obligated to supply the next king cake or host the next party or both. King cake parties may be held at the homes of people who live on or near the routes of Carnival parades.

The purpose of the cake is to get rid of all the lard and sugar in the house, in preparation for Lent.

I'm not Catholic, but I sure enjoy the cake, with all its crunchy sugary goodness!
