What are the 5 basic characteristics of classical music?

The Classical period
  • an emphasis on elegance and balance.
  • short well-balanced melodies and clear-cut question and answer phrases.
  • mainly simple diatonic harmony.
  • mainly homophonic textures (melody plus accompaniment) but with some use of counterpoint (where two or more melodic lines are combined)
  • use of contrasting moods.

And if there is any sort of hypnotic rhythm or groove that is purely by accident. Fun when it happens though.

I love discovering a piece of music I'm not familiar with. The Andante is simply lovely and starts at about 12:10.

J.S. Bach - Christmas Oratorio BWV 248 I "Jauchzet, frohlocket"

The best baritone ever, at 19:00. My wife said it's too bad he didn't know the words, had to look down and sing downwards sometimes. I didn't know she was so unforgiving.
