Most states have a website you can go to directly to search for unclaimed money.  You might try that with your state to make sure it's legit. Might make your mom feel a little more confident about it. Two grand is nothing to sneeze at, in my opinion (YMMV).

Here in NC the state lets news organizations put out the word with contact info to log on and see if there is anything for you.
Going online to official website is definitely safest way to check it out.

Yup I’m dealing with something similar for years. Trying to get the house in my name after mom’s death 8 years ago. Went to the probate courthouse, talked to layers on pro bono with little or no instruction or help. They make it impossible to get anything done. They can’t even say what the paperwork forms I have to fill out to get to probate level.

It’s a scam to get lawyers a big payout.  BTW, I’ve been living in the same house for 54 years. So I can’t do anything legal with the house including the insurance.

I blame mom for putting off the legal paperwork and having me to deal with the mess.

As caretaker for my Mom, she and I had time to evaluate the accounts and get my name on as beneficiary. Same with her checking, made it a joint account. She was very thorough.
BUT... this one account we missed getting me as the beneficiary, and I found two I-bonds with my Dad as Beneficiary. So there always seems to be some cracks despite one's best efforts.
Sorry to hear others are going through this, but nice to know I'm not an idiot either.

Sooooo, I asked the teller what exactly does Broadway need to close the account. He asked ME what docs I had. Only DC at the time. He scanned it, gave it back and I again asked if the bank would be in touch to tell me what docs or legals were needed to deal with the account. Never, in any of this was I directed to an administrator or Estate planner or legal department. This poor clueless teller was left to deal with this.

Nothing for four months.

Yesterday after taking Will, Signed Affidavit of Heirship, Executor papers, Drivers License, ... (rabies records for my pets, blood and urine samples,)  etc. to the bank ... their legal department calls me and demands a full on Probate and letters of Testimony. Nothing in writing, no specifics, just a phone call from some guy named "Eddie."
Couldn't have told me months ago, when my Attorney was deciding Affidavit or Will Probate and I asked them for information?
This estate was probated in 2018 when Dad died. Nothings changed, no new Lear Jets or Infinity pools, marriages or other heirs were obtained while Mom was practically immobile these last years. I'm it. The last of a dystopian dynasty!

Probate costs $2k, an affidavit of Heirship: $550. The affidavit has already turned over 7/8 of the estate, Her house, everything.
But these slugs are going to charge me $2K to get $3K.

That sucks. When my mother died, we never went through probate since my siblings and I all get along. I don't think they had the affidavit thing. Basically, the estate still exists, but all the assets have been distributed, so no one cares.

Same over here, too. So it's important to pass the dos and don'ts for the rest of us.
Just like extracting (and saving) some cash upfront any demise. Just for the event.

For me it was my parents killing themselves laughing while watching a comedy routine on TV where the actors were singing, "Where were you when the ship hit the sand?" Then having to explain the reference and explain the reference

Similar to the time when I dragged my dad over to the TV to watch this funny show I enjoyed called Monty Python.  And he'd never heard of them before (back in ye olde days of broadcast & CRTs) .  I don't recall the episode.  I do recall his eyes widening, the eyebrows coming up, and maybe a bit of a grin when some fully nekkid bouncing boobage crossed the screen!  At the time, I didn't know that could happen!

For me and my pal, it was a huge grocery bag stuffed to the top with golf balls.   So many pretty lawns got redecorated.   (Statute of limitations has run out on that, I checked)
