The "thumbs" have turned the comment section from a place to share relations and reactions to the standard social media situation of chasing likes.  Vapid praise gets rewarded.  Criticism, no matter the quality or insight, is unwelcome and systematically down-thumbed.  Frankly, the thumbs were a disruptive addition that kind of wrecked the comment section imho.
