I would ask how you've been, it's all over the internet
But, hey, I mean you knew that after all
If you're looking for an autopsy or a half-assed half apology
Then I think you picked the wrong time to make this call
It is not irrelevant that you stopped taking your medicine
But I'm giving you the benefit 'cause it's raining out
I'll tell you how the weather is
And you'll slip into some eloquently ramblin' mixed messaging
I should shut you down
But it's cold, and it's cold, and it's cold, and it's cold, and it's cold
And I don't know, I'm alone, I'm alone, I'm alone, I'm alone
I hope you tell me that you're winding down
That you've lost the taste to face the crowd
That whatever made you famous made you sick
That you can only do what pain allows
It ain't up to you to make it out
And there ain't no shame in callin' this thing quits
But you don't, and you don't, what you don't, and you don't, and you don't
You're a ghost, you're a ghost, you're a ghost, you're a ghost, and you're
Poison spreading to my lungs
I ain't holding breath, ain't holdin' any faith at all
And I'll pray for you, be in pain for you
I'll leave the porch light on
Heartbroken, each morning when it's me that turns it off
So it goes, so it goes, so it goes
You act like we just sit up here and wait for you to reappear
But, baby, there are bills to pay, and your dad's road needs salt
And I try to drown out all the talk, the eyeballs in the parking lot
Tell people it ain't me you want, but I guess you're my fault
You're a ghost, you're a ghost, you're a ghost, you're a ghost, you're a ghost
And I choke, and I choke, and I choke, and I choke on the
Poison spreading to my lungs
I ain't holding breath, ain't holdin' any faith at all
And I'll pray for you, be in pain for you
I'll leave the porch light on
Heartbroken, each morning when it's me that turns it off
So it goes, so it goes, so it goes
Poison spreading to my lungs

And I'll pray for you, be in pain for you
I'll leave the porch light on

Mumford & Sons clone?
I'd posted Mumford's Son on another of his songs here, so absolutely agree with you here!
horrible rating mainly for the poor choice in lyrics (autopsy [really?? hot tip: never, ever, ever, ever, under any circumstances, ever, ever, ever, use the word autopsy in a song). some others: stopped taking your medicine? (nope) eyeballs in parking lot (eek) I don't know there were others, enough to make it stand out. melody not great either. downvote me.
I'm not sure that I've ever actually encountered someone that genuinely doesn't get that song lyrics, like poetry, aren't typically 100% literal. When he speaks of eyeballs, he means that people are watching. Gawking. The autopsy in the song is an examination of the circumstances that lead up to the moment he's singing of; not a medical procedure on a corpse. Music is a sort of fiction and metaphor, not non-fiction and documentary...

I am genuinely confused: what’s beyond the pale about the word “autopsy” in a song?

Yes it's a metaphor but it still brings things to mind. Take The Great Divide for instance. This man shamelessly uses skin cancer and murderers as a throwaway lyric. So he'll never make a fan out of me, and I know he won't care and neither will anyone else, and that's okay for everyone.
