possibly one good result from this arctic front. ..although the temps up in the mts are not as low as they are here in Denver.
The most pronounced beetle kill (AFAIK) was in the scenic corridors where they had a century of fire suppression. As the trees were thinned and meadows opened up, the bear population has exploded. Correlation/Causation I know but the whole ecosystem has changed.
Yeah, it used to hit -40 every few years, and for extended periods every decade or two.
The ski hill I patrol at used to be old growth lodgepole, with 7 or 8 slashes mowed in the trees for people to ski on. In the last 30 years, over 90% of those trees have gone away, so that you can't even see the old runs and no one skis on them anyway because the creek drainages are more fun. It's opened our "skiable terrain" up by like 1000% without really expanding the area. âall due to beetle kill.

Is that possible in the Rockies/Sierras? Mongolia...maybe? Can't imagine there are ever -40 temps in the US for 2 weeks.

This is a crazy few days for sure. Originally it looked like snow here (Philly)...so I guess I can't complain about the rain now, given we have to travel for 3 of the next 4 days (local family events). The temp here is 58° at midnight tonight, and 9° 24 hours later.
If youâre driving be careful.
If your flying remember the barf bags.
Man I miss the barf emoji.
Bracing for 57° with 40-50mph winds and sideways winds on Friday and dropping temps to the 20âs Saturday and Sunday.
I hate it when we get rain then freezing temps the next day and you have to get the blowtorch out to melt everything. Hopefully my salt order should be ready for pickup at my ACE hardware today. Fingers crossed.
And this is freakinâ New England to boot!

Been a decade or two since the last time we hit -30.
People from lower elevations, note that controlling bark beetles requires a -40F blast for about two weeks. Ergo all the beetle killed trees throughout the Rockies and Sierras.
