You had something to hide
Should have hidden it, shouldn't you
Now you're not satisfied
With what you're being put through
It's just time to pay the price
For not listening to advice
And deciding in your youth
On the policy of truth
Things could be so different now
It used to be so civilized
You will always wonder how
It could have been if you'd only lied
It's too late to change events
It's time to face the consequence
For delivering the proof
In the policy of truth
Never again
Is what you swore
The time before
Never again
Is what you swore
The time before
Now you're standing there tongue tied
You'd better learn your lesson well
Hide what you have to hide
And tell what you have to tell
You'll see your problems multiplied
If you continually decide
To faithfully pursue
The policy of truth
Never again
Is what you swore
The time before
Should have hidden it, shouldn't you
Now you're not satisfied
With what you're being put through

This band was so far ahead of its time. So glad their time will never end!

With their new album having released last week (Memento Mori) it was great to hear one of their classics on RP. Talk about longevity. Wonderful track and wonderful band 😀
Thankfully we can tell the dancer from the dance...
Love love love it 💗
This album of theirs will always remind me of the wild times I spent in Northern Territory and Tropical Queensland when it just came out, when we all had it going in every hostel or on any boat or road adventure. Great tunes in great places!

This song, almost more than any other, reminds me of something that happened to me in the fall of 1993. This song was blasted over and over again mountain biking outside of Colorado Springs on some trail skirting the edge of a mountain lake, rimmed with yellow Aspens at their peak. Finding it today rockets me back to a time just before my son was born.
From Dylan to Radiohead to the OJ's on to Depeche Mode : >

Top!
One of the best songs of DM
I've been rediscovering this album lately. Great production. I think it shows the 'just right' use of synthesizers.
Very 80's (ok, it came out in 90) but also very timeless.

This album was released in Soviet Union - Russia in 1991 with greаt success.
Great Album.....Top 100 of All Time.....

It's from my Goth daze... Ie when I had enough hair to do the 2 step to...I just lost 4 minutes and 51 seconds of work time. Thanks!
I'm not the biggest fan of synth music, but these guys have an excellent portfolio of fantastic songs, love their music, hard to believe they've been producing for decades! Or maybe it's just hard to believe that I'm so much older....
Thanks for this! Have always loved Depeche Mode.
Nice bass line and repeating motifs.
Great song, great album!!

Acknowledging that I mention this at every opportunity, I always urge serious DM fans to find a way to listen to the 5.1 mixes that were released as part of the European market re-releases in 2004/2005. If you think Violator and other albums kick ass in stereo, wait until you hear them well mixed in surround. It makes for a tremendously engaging listening experience.

I've seen multiple ads here on NYC TV for their upcoming "Spirit" tour. An unusual big media buy. Maybe I don't pay a lot of attention, but I seldom see that here for music acts.
I saw them in Bercy PARIS in 1990. The greatest concert i have never seen !!!

Liked it when it came out, and I still like it. Much better than much of what was on the radio at the time. The lyrics have that inevitable feeling I associate with quality.
Reminds me of why I hate 90% of 80's music...........thanks
Edit: 1990? I guess they managed to stretch the "yuck" factor in to the 90's barely

Because, strangely enough, DM are exponents of Goth, or rather electro-goth. Their depressive, agonised lyrics replete with religious imagery and themes are distinctively Goth, as Goth as the Sisters or the Neph but with a poppy danceable beat. To my shame I dismissed them in the 80s as disposable electro-pop and have only got into them properly in recent years, not uncoincidentally when I started listening to RP. So thanks to RP for helping me rediscover this group. An easy 9 from the (closet Goth) Nottingham jury.

I have to say that I'm always sort of amazed at the love Depeche Mode gets around RP. Though I'm not a fan, well, more power to 'em.

Is it just a rumor that they were attached at the head prior to a surgical separation? Was it successful ? Are they signifying how many times in their life the got laid ? So, what do they have to smile about ?
Neither has a father

It is so nice to hear these guys on the radio :)
I used to love this album. Almost forgot about it...great stuff
Nice segue from PF, Bill.
I do love this song... and Depeche. I don't get all the hate aimed toward them.
I'm always surprised how well Depeche Mode holds up over time compared to other music that I liked at that time. You can't deny that it's great stuff. I like it almost as much now as I did back then.
I was about to say that it was rather cruel of Bill to place Depeche Mode after Pink Floyd, but this song has more legs than I originally gave it credit for.
what does tom petty have to do with anything? I read back in all the posts and I don't get it?

Orgasmic! Seriously, that's what I call that fade! To go from PF's Young Lust to DM's Policy of Truth. That was simply... orgasmic.
