Dear God, hope you got the letter, and
I pray you can make it better down here
I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer
But all the people that you made in your image
See them starving on their feet
'Cause they don't get enough to eat from God
I can't believe in you

Dear God, sorry to disturb you, but
I feel that I should be heard loud and clear
We all need a big reduction in amount of tears
And all the people that you made in your image
See them fighting in the street
'Cause they can't make opinions meet about God
I can't believe in you

Did you make disease, and the diamond blue?
Did you make mankind after we made you?
And the devil too

Dear God, don't know if you noticed, but
Your name is on a lot of quotes in this book
Us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look
And all the people that you made in your image
Still believing that junk is true
Well I know it ain't and so do you, dear God
I can't believe in
I don't believe in

I won't believe in heaven and hell
No saints, no sinners, no devil as well
No pearly gates, no thorny crown
You're always letting us humans down
The wars you bring, the babes you drown
Those lost at sea and never found
And it's the same the whole world 'round
The hurt I see helps to compound
The Father, Son and Holy Ghost
Is just somebody's unholy hoax
And if you're up there you'll perceive
That my heart's here upon my sleeve
If there's one thing I don't believe in

It's you
Dear God

Its all so much more amazing when you take God out of the equation.....

Not to mention you get to avoid all that disappointment when your dead
This should be followed by "What if God Was one of Us"!
Had to bump it up to 10 just for the irony.
GODLIKE!!!
Well said,I certainly think along the same lines✌️
I respect your views and hope you are right. But, look at it from a non-believer's point of view: If this is it, then we need to do everything we can to minimize the pain and suffering in this life. We must act on our own and together and not hope that somewhere out there is something that will take care of it for us. It's in our hands, not his.

This is NOT just a place to "wipe your feet" before going on to other "nice places."
The lyrics are spot on. Thank you Andy, thank you Colin.  Just wish you could've gotten past your differences and continued on.
The discussion on this song is fascinating - as much so as the song itself. Interesting reading.

This has always been an amazing song but I just noticed the incredible guitar work (not to mention the violin) for the first time.

Yes, indeed, and faith utilizes other modalities besides the cerebral. There is more to the essence of life than scientific facts. But again, debate is fruitless.

Yes, I agree. I think there is much more to life than current science can offer us. And many of us need a little belief in something to help get through the day.

What bugs me is things like pretending you (meaning a general "you", not anyone here in particular) know God's thoughts and wishes. Or that your belief is better than mine. Or that God needs money. Or when your beliefs contradict science and you persecute those who are telling the truth ala Copernicus, Galileo, etc. Or when your belief compels you to pass laws about what a woman can and cannot do with her own body. I think part of the debate is about these overstepping of boundaries, not so much faith/belief itself, which I think is part of the human condition.

This album is perfect in every way - how can i rate it 11?  More XTC on RP please

XTC didn't like the sound engineering of Skylarking (amongst other things about the recording!) and they eventually found the issue and re-released it titled the 'corrected polarity' version. Check it out if you like the album - i was surprised at the difference in sound quality and depth.
I hate it when I hear a song like this on RP and decide to stop what I'm doing in order to rate the song and give it the 10 it deserves, only to go to the website and find that I've already done so.

Seems an intrinsic part of human nature to have a concept of god, it's been around for as long as humanity, so it makes you wonder. Apart from wars, religion has also given many people hope and inspiration, and has greatly helped to organize societies along common values and principles.
With the Steven Wilson 5.1 mix coming out and those involved doing press, the ill will still continues.

Among other things, Partridge has said that Todd is a good arranger but a not-so-good engineer.

I think this song is MUCH more complex than that.

Of course, he rails against God as nonexistent - which is nonsense if he really didn't believe. He'd simply walk away rather than waste his breath.
Instead, it's a petulant, impotent - but completely self-aware - frustration that he doesn't want to believe, but can't help himself. And so he's angry. and disappointed.

He half-heartedly includes all the usual "you don't exist" arguments, while still addressing God directly.

It's some really well done lyricism.
Rundgren and XTC didn't get along during this, but he obviously took their songs and helped them create something great.
I admire these infidels.
I would rate this Godlike.....but.....9.

Makes me laugh that some folks in the US of A talk about being a 'liberal' as if it's some kind of affliction and not just an opinion. Hell we even have a Liberal Party up here in Canadia...and notice the big 'L'.
One of the best B Sides ever ( Grass was the A Side ) which ended up on the CD version of Skylarking thanks in part to US college radio playing the crap out of it. This band put out some incredible music over their lifespan. Their high point in my mind being English Settlement featuring two songs that would give Dear God a run for its money and ability to polemicize - Knuckle Down and Melt The Guns.
If he only was able to express his opinion more clearly :-)

Y'know, I always felt that, as a mid-westerner from Michigan, we had a pretty neutral accent, and it was really only in New England, the South, and a few other places that really had an accent.  I didn't immediately notice any difference when I moved to California, for example.  It was only when I returned home years later that I realized we actually have a distinct, if subtle accent.  Mostly in the 'r's.

This will seem really stupid to most...

The part was sung by a friend of producer Todd Rundgren. I don't know for sure, but he's American, and the album was recorded in the U.S., so most likely she's American. Lots of other artists "sound American" too, for what it's worth, such as Abba (at least they don't have Swedish accents on the songs), Neil Young, etc.

True enough. Religion is usually a cover and legitimation and the 'official' reason for fighting, as Lemmoth wrote, but in the end it all comes down to economics. It always does.

I'm a conservative pragmatist. Love the song, always have. Nothing more healthy than questioning authority, real or imagined. Why are you so scared of people trying to find a practical way to live with an out of control Government? Vilifying a group of political activists isn't progressive, nor is stereotyping a large number of people to fit tidily in a mental box.

We all have to live in this country, and realize that it will take a compromising consensus to do so effectively. That starts with not telling you what to do, rather letting everyone make their own choices to rise or fall as they will. The reason for such a large pragmatic small Government moment has everything to do with personal responsibility over Government control. Racist and ignorant individuals are out there with stupid signs in every movement from Code Pink to John Birch and in between. Why not engage in discussion and solution instead of categorization and rejection? This is not a sporting event, everybody can win.

This one gets it.  Got to get God's attention.

Would give it an 8, but can't resist the irony of classifying it as 'Godlike'.

Sometimes I wonder if The Dukes of Stratosphere follow up was kind of ...........well to take away the attention that song, (probably unintentionally),  stirred up.
I don't know if that made any sense, but I personally find most XTC songs to be so creatively written and well crafted.

Exactly...some say doubt is the essence of faith.  This song is another way of asking the question someone else once asked, "God, why have you forsaken me?"  But I guess arguing that would be intruding in a family dispute.  (1-ADAM 12, see a man...)

Answer me two questions:

1. when did you first come to the realization that the "government was 'out of control'?"
2. are you ready to dismantle the two programs that have effectively ended that centuries long problem in Western Society of how to allow the elderly to live out their lives with dignity and free from economic worry?

I agree, but the funny thing is that it was originally left off of Skylarking. I've always wondered why the band didn't immediately recognize how good the song was. Does anyone know the story?

What I've read is that the prolific Andy Partridge submitted a lot of demos to Todd for consideration for the album. Todd chose which songs, the order and came up with the theme for "Skylarking" (the passage of time). Andy wasn't happy with the control that Todd is known for asserting as a producer so the whole process of putting the album together was fraught with tension, mostly between Andy and Todd.

When recording was completed they still had too many songs for an LP. Todd thought "Dear God" was the strongest track and Andy disagreed and didn't even want it included. He may have been worried about the controversial nature of the song.

Andy won out (initially, anyway) and "Dear God" was not included on the original issue of "Skylarking"."Dear God" was released as some sort of a single or EP and did very well, so on later pressings "Mermaid Smiles" was removed and "Dear God" added.
Well said.
Too many people make their opinions based on the media they watch or the politicians they follow. Most lack the wit to look at things objectively.

Not at all. Oh ye of little faith. In Christianity it is acceptable, obligatory even, to address the deity with questions like the ones presented in this song.  You are just plain wrong there.

Maybe someone will ask a T.E.A. baggers for an opinion on this tune - should be good for a segment on The Daily Show.

Its funny to me how we (the tea baggers that is) are the ones always being accused of being hateful.  Introspection dude... try it sometime.

One of Todd Rundgren's best productions and probably the best song from the Skylarking album.

I agree, but the funny thing is that it was originally left off of Skylarking. I've always wondered why the band didn't immediately recognize how good the song was. Does anyone know the story?
