They're putting up reindeer and singing songs of joy and peace
Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on
But it don't snow here, it stays pretty green
I'm gonna make a lot of money, then I'm gonna quit this crazy scene
I wish I had a river I could skate away on
I wish I had a river so long
I would teach my feet to fly
Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on
I made my baby cry
He tried hard to help me, you know, he put me at ease
And he loved me so naughty, made me weak in the knees
Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on
But I'm so hard to handle, I'm selfish and I'm sad
Now I've gone and lost the best baby that I ever had
Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on
I wish I had a river so long
I would teach my feet to fly
Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on
I made my baby say goodbye
It's coming on Christmas, they're cutting down trees
They're putting up reindeer, singing songs of joy and peace
I wish I had a river I could skate away on
Ditto
Dianne Reeves' cover of this song is even beter
a christmas song
hurray
This might also very well be the best quintessential Canadian blues song (not many countries where you can skate away on a river).
What a superbly composed song. Ms Mitchell is a true gem of an artist.
Total agreement!
I mean, you basically do it for Pink Floyd , Jethro Tull, and Yes.
Hey...those are all English bands! What gives? Ha!
Bill you should play more Christmas Songs.
THANKS
Much like I enjoy "Christmas" movies like Die Hard, I like tunes like this, that aren't SO OVERPLAYED and tedious; from a great album and artist...this gets a 'seasonal' 9 rating....LLRP!!
Bill you should play more Christmas Songs.
THANKS
The first one was the toughest...
She really nails the Christmas blues on this one. To this day, it brings back my Christmases alone, sometimes not by choice.

Love this song...one of the best Christmas songs.
I especially like Robert Downey's version that he did on Ally McBeal so many years ago.
and to quote from another one of my fave Christmas songs....
"Hey...Santa...pass us that bottle, will ya"
What elections?
I am learning this very clearly this year. Sorry I missed Joni a few minutes ago. I'll look forward to hearing her sing this next time. Merry Christmas to everyone celebrating this year.
As a child, I found broccoli went down better with ketchup — when my parents were not watching.
Music is a little like hard-to-like food; repeated exposure helps.
Although Joni lived in Detroit for just a short time, she learned something while here that changed her life and made her into a widely respected musician: alternative tuning.
Ya eh
Fantastic album!

Not really a Christmas song, but one of the best set around Christmas time.
Not really a Christmas movie, but one set at Christmas - "The Thin Man". The first, best and only one based directly on the book. William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles. I have to see this movie every year about this time.
Fantastic!!!!!
Both of them.
Especially at this time of the year...
Great book about Joni —
Will You Take Me As I Am: Joni Mitchell's Blue Period
As a born Canadian, I have a soft spot for Joni Mitchell.

Same here.
Me too.
Me too.
I'd agree with the person below me...I don't consider this Christmas music. It just happens to be set during the Christmas season, but it's not really a Christmas song. Same thing with Dan Fogelberg's "Another Auld Lang Syne"...it's set during the holiday season, but it's main theme is not about the holiday itself.
I was just thinking....my year is never complete until I hear this and then at new years Dan Fogelberg's Another Auld Lang Syne....like him or not there's no escaping the incredible poignancy (sp?) of that song!
one year later
Well... I just rated it a 9, so we're canceling each other out.
Brilliant seque to George Winston - Variations on the Canon afterward.
Well done, my man! Merry melancholy.
Boff!
Absolutely!! Yes, PLEASE, Bill!

What I've always loved about this song is the simple re-arrangement of "Jingle Bells" that gives it that haunting quality.
I don't lump this in with Holiday music. It's certainly not ABOUT the holidays, just set during the time of year. Such a poignant song. Loves me some Joni.

Sigh...
Many times I have wished I had a river I could skate away on...
