It ain't no joke I'd like to buy the world a toke
And teach the world to sing in perfect harmony
And teach the world to snuff the fires and the liars
Hey I know it's just a song but it's spice for the recipe
This is a love attack I know it went out but it's back.
It's just like any fad it retracts before impact
And just like fashion it's a passion for the with it and hip
If you got the goods they'll come and buy it just to stay in the clique
[Chorus:]
So don't delay act now supplies are running out
Allow if you're still alive six to eight years to arrive
And if you follow there may be a tomorrow
But if the offer's shunned you might as well be walkin' on the sun
Twenty-five years ago they spoke out and they broke out
Of recession and oppression and together they toked
And they folked out with guitars around a bonfire
Just singin' and clappin' man what the hell happened
Then some were spellbound some were hellbound
Some they fell down and some got back up and
Fought back 'gainst the melt down
And their kids were hippie chicks all hypocrites
Because fashion is smashin' the true meaning of it
[Repeat Chorus]
It ain't no joke when a mama's handkerchief is soaked
With her tears because her baby's life has been revoked
The bond is broke up so choke up and focus on the close up
Mr. Wizard can't perform no godlike hocus-pocus
So don't sit back kick back and watch the world get bushwhacked
News at 10:00 your neighborhood is under attack
Put away the crack before the crack puts you away
You need to be there when your baby's old enough to relate
[Repeat Chorus]
You might as well be walkin' on the sun
You might as well be walkin' on the sun
You might as well be walkin' on the sun
You might as well be walkin' on the sun

Yes, we could use this song in Minneapolis....
It's been heart breaking now listening to the trial.
George was murdered. No question about that!
This song was written as an escape from the tension associated w/ the Rodney King trial and subsequent riots. I just learned that yesterday in reading the Wiki page. Huh....had NO IDEA at all.
The reason I have this one rated at a 9 is due to my hiking buddy, PGT, using this as a "hahaha we're having fun on this grueling hike" and often times he or I will just shout out "supplies...they're running low....so....act now!" and really just being goofballs in the mountains. Now I can't wait to tell PGT how this was written to be fun in the face of those riots in 1992 (damn it's been 26.5 years?))
Long Live RP!! And here's to a world where NO ONE is nearly beaten to death, esp. not by cops.

How did this get into my favorites when I haven't even rated it?
This is terrible

Is this the same band that played at the 2020 Sturgis rally?
Pure sound beauty
We danced our ÄRSCHE away to that in 1999 Cologne - Bel Air
8>9 for the more current than we'd wish lyrics.

Great song. Good album. Fun band.

Say what you will about the band and its singer and all that, but this is actually a pretty darn good song.
Why, after finally reading the lyrics after all these plays, am I thinking about where my Mont Blanc Pen is?
There are a lot of tunes that sound better in the RP setting than they did originally.
So I was kinda jamming out, until I realized I was listening to Smash Mouth. I kinda feel like I was rickrolled now...
But yeah, I remember when this first came out, it really was kinda cool... They really didn't jump the shark until All-Star.

No one likes Smash Mouth as much as this mashup artist: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mouth_Sounds
Fun album, and it's free. I prefer the sans Smash Mouth follow up Mouth Silence, and his latest album, Mouth Moods, is pretty decent too.

Just fun .....kinda neat that way

Turn it up, for God's sake. And crank up those ratings, while you're at it. Bangin' track. Outstanding.

There's some catchy little jingles on this album, actually. Quite underrated.
One hit wonder?
So many favorable comments - why such a low rating?
A fun tune by a fun band. However, much like Fountains of Wayne, people assume they've only put out singles that are repeated on the radio like this song, and make catchy bubble gum and miss out on a pretty solid body of work. Some of the B-sides, like the track Fallen Horses, are very cool and more out there than this bubble gum.
And Fountains of Wayne are truly phenomenal artists, if only people could forget Stacey's Mom for ten minutes.

Nice Bill, have not heard this in....ages
So much 90's!! Such fun!
love it...memories of undergrad!
Also loving this tune
Really? :(
Love the nasty keyboards! Farfisa?

Great song. Good album. Fun band.
Wow. Not played since'06?

Before we got married, my wife went on a date with the guitar player. My impartiality is impaired! Watch out, Smashmouth!
("Laminated Lists" of freebies with celebrities are exempt)
My company hired them for a party. They put on a great show for only a couple hundred people. I danced to every song!
WHY IN THE HELL ARE YOU PLAYING THIS???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
This was, for whatever reason, the official theme song of my middle school/high school cross country running team.
I love this song! I hate the rest of the album. This song alone is proof that we need iTunes, et al. That is--the ability to buy at a fair price the one good song on an otherwise crappy CD.
Went to school with the lead singer, and interviewed their guitarist back in his previous band, so I can't help but have a soft spot for these guys. Astro-Lounge was a solid album, but they seem to have lost direction a bit. Still, hard to root against these SJ natives...
what you say to your boyfriend?
what the hell is a more man?
Naysay all you want but this song was hugely popular for good reason - extremely catchy and original.

Hey high school, what's up.
No thank you.
Overplayed? Absolutely. It still makes me smile and bop.
What?! Why!?! *mute*
Time for a new, higher quality rip, sounds pretty muddy on the 192 stream.
This blows!!!!!!!!!!
Despite severe overplay on mainstream radio, this song persists as a catchy pop tune I enjoy hearing 2 or 3 times a year. Thanks, Bill.
"Frat Boy Bar Band"??? It's amazing how we human beings are so quick to pigeonhole artists without hearing any of their work besides what gets played in public. I'm presuming big-time that you labellers don't own any of Smashmouth's work, and therefore haven't heard what didn't make it onto the radio. Maybe you have all listened to the group, seen them perform, really given them a chance and have made an informed decision--it just doesn't seem that way.
Then again, quick analysis and prejudice are the hallmarks of survival. For sure I wouldn't be here if my ancestors had paused to consider whether killing some huge charging beast might result in its extinction. It just hasn't been long enough for these reflexes to disappear, and they're still mostly transparent. We don't need them nearly as much as we used to, and so often I find myself surviving a friendly situation because I've given in to the fear that I'm threatened somehow.
I missed out on Elvis and the Beatles while they were still making new music because they were just "too popular", i.e., my 10-year-old consciousness was mature enough to know I wanted my own path, but too busy being right to actually listen. I get the "crammed down my throat" feeling, and I still don't like to just go along with what's popular (don't get me started about war and patriotism), but I don't appreciate the uninformed insults.
e·clec·tic adj.
1. Selecting or employing individual elements from a variety of sources, systems, or styles: an eclectic taste in music; an eclectic approach to managing the economy.
2. Made up of or combining elements from a variety of sources: "a popular bar patronized by an eclectic collection of artists, writers, secretaries and aging soldiers on reserve duty" (Curtis Wilkie).
I'd say I like fully half the tracks on "astro lounge", there are some serious sleepers on that album- "I just wanna see" is a great tune.
Actually, this segue of two horrible songs worked great! Since I had to turn the volume off on both, I actually got some work done
Thanks Bill, I needed that!

but I love the lyrics for this one. Having lived through the period both alluded to and the time the song was written, I think it has more wit and things to say that a lot of songs I hear.

Smashmouth is sucko-barfo, but this song is a gem. They have spent the rest of their careers trying to duplicate this one song and they never will be able to pull it off.
The chorus always reminds me of Love Potion #9.
Huh?
Ain't complaining, but Bill's got a lot of guts playing this "frat boy pop crap" to this crowd.
Now that it is no longer shoved down my throat by FM, I kinda like hearing this song... brings back happy college memories if nothing else (yes, I was one of those frat boys grovin' to this song at one time)
Oh, lighten up! The song is fun (once in a while).

pleeeeze do not compare the original and musically creative Cake to this college frat bar band
I love hearing this kind of stuff occasionally on RP. Sure, it riles up the "contempt for the masses" crowd, but it's all good. They ain't happy unless they're turning up their noses at something. :p
i agree quite fully with your comments on Smashmouth. But cake is great, man. Give 'em a couple more listens 'specially "long line of cars" that's been making some rounds on the playlist lately.

This is one of the only songs (besides anything by Cake) that makes me switch RP right off. Now THAT is bad.
BOO!
overplayed commercial blech! doesn\'t deserve to touch the rp playlist.
I wouldn\'t go so far as to say more Smashmouth, but the intelligent songs that they do - like this one - is a treat to hear on RP! Thanks
Just awful.
From the \"Never thought I\'d hear it here\" department! I\'ll have to be the second to admit to the guilty pleasure of it all. Dare I even say \"More SmashMouth!\"
Oh blagh. This has NO place here. At first I totally glossed over this one - I\'ve heard it so many times it\'s easy to just overlook it. then I realized it has shown up on RP! This is just the corporate rock crap we\'re trying to avoid!
NO NO NO!
Alright, I\'ll be the first to admit this is a guilty pleasure - I had to look around before I turned up the volume...
Ohhhhhh. Not "when your baby's old enough to be laid." 'K. Right, makes sense. I knew that all along.
