I forgive you boy, I will prevail
Too much to take, some cross to bear
I'm hiding in the trees with a picnic, she's over there
Yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah
She didn't scream, she didn't make a sound
I forgive you boy, but don't leave town
Cold black skin, naked in the rain
Hammer flash in the lightning
They're hurting her again
Let me put you in the picture
Let me show you what I mean
The messiah is my sister
Ain't no king man she's my queen
Let me put you in the picture
Let me show you what I mean
The messiah is my sister
Ain't no king man she's my queen
I have a dream, I've seen the light
Don't put it out, say she's alright
Yeah she's my sister
She didn't scream, she didn't make a sound
I forgive you boy, but don't leave town
Cold black skin, naked in the rain
Hammer flash in the lightning
They're hurting her again
Oh Oh

If LZ were from Manchester.
Agreed 200%

I think I know what you mean.....
The VIBES and the GUITAR ! Wow!!
Never listened to the lyrics before. WTF?
Love to have some kind of insight on thoughts behind these lyrics
Never listened to the lyrics before. WTF?
i know. me either. love the groove, got lost, didn't pay attention to lyrics and then i did...whoa.
Perfect blues rock, and singular, unmistakable guitar work. If not genre-defining, then at least genre-leading.
And beyond that...let's ponder the lyrics.
Not sure what happened in the states but they were massive in the UK. Shame IB had to use autotune as he couldn't sing a note though
Autotune n 1994?
Not in 1994.
...okay: I had to look it up "Introduced in 1997".
Admittedly, I thought it dated from years later.
Even the "Chez effect" already guess back all the way to 1998. Feels like yesterday.
Alot of people criticise this song for being too repetitive. So be it. So be it. So be it. I still think the guitar work is incredible. Supposedly, the inspiration for the lyric, "Let me put you in the picture, let me show what I mean, emesara (?) is my sister, man she's my queen" came from a bar brawl Ian Brown saw. The instigator was a woman who was demonstrating to a guy in the bar who just wasn't getting it, why he shouldn't hit on her girlfriend. It's good fun.
Agreed, guitar (and rock tune) is great - on the song's inspiration; what are your sources? Lyrics express more than a bar brawl (you must know, musicians also read a lot for their inspiration).
Check this out (from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...):
"In 1995, guitarist John Squire said the lyrics were inspired by British author Rosalind Miles' 1988 book The Women's History of the World.[5] The book examines the roles of women, their representation, and their power through history"
Underrated band

Also just delightful to play on Rock Band.

I forgive you boy, but don't leave town.
It means Christ is a woman.
Sounds like she's black too--
"Cold black skin, naked in the rain"
What is this "sister"? What does "the messiah is my sister" mean? Are they just writing random verses?
It means Christ is a woman.
Thanks, RP. Had no clue about this band except for what I've heard here.
Keep comin' back. There's soooooo much more to love.
Love SRV's work... but this is pretty different from most of what he did.... with the possible exception of the Voodoo Chile nuance... but that was really Henrdix not SRV.
Love this one!
Also, that chorus can be an evil earworm.
Never put the word Stones in your band name if you want to be huge.

The guitar and drums proves this band was not just a bunch of stoners.
sounds like he's singing "the Mess-sigher" to me, like some people say "ider" instead of "idea".
You don't look a day over 22.

In the context of the lyrics it seems relatively coherent: a female martyr/messiah/queen entity apparently.
If it's intended as a statement of theology, it's a little dodgy or at least wildly unorthodox—but who cares? Those badass electric guitars are good enough for me.
F I N E
Put me in the picture. Just stop singing.
I also like "I Wanna Be a Dog"
It's "I wanna, I wanna, I wanna be YOUR dog."
That'd be awesome. Except what if this song triggered Tracy Chapman, and that triggered Peter Gabriel and then Peter Gabriel triggered this disaster of a song. Infinite loop my friend. Infinite loop.
That is funny. And then my mind starts thinking about how I would write the code to avoid that infinite loop. I'm a dork.

I don't know if any lawsuit would get very far over a three- or four-note riff, but you never know, stranger things have happened. This song seems like it has more in common with Led Zeppelin's "Moby Dick" but Page "borrowed" a lot of his riffs and progressions over the years too. I'd guess it's an obvious homage to both tunes - they weren't trying to fool anyone.
Trying to make picture of what I maybe dreamt last night.
Perv!
Damn good song. A 9 from me.
It's "Ain't no king, man, she's my queen."
If you like them it is a must see.
"no pleasin some people"
"thats just what Jesus said sir"
It still rocks though. (Sorry, Jimmy.)
That it is. Play it LOUD.
Crap.....I have 15:00 to get this script done and I have to chair dance....yeah yeah yeah....

No wonder there is war in the MIddle East!
Andy had something to do with this song?
You're from Texas, so no you're not "more correct!"
And you are not the DECIDER
You and me both, bro. If Liam (or maybe it's Noel) can say supah nover, why can't he say super nova?
(Yeah, I know, lingual and cultural relativism and all that, and who's to say my pronunciation is more correct blah blah blah.)
What's the matter? Ya'll don't understand the Queen's English?

Janie Hendrix should sue them. (I'm surprised she hasn't already!)
what good is that going to bring to anyone?
As GB Shaw apocryphally said: The US and Britain are two nations separated by a common language. Or Oscar Wilde: "We have really everything in common with America nowadays, except, of course, language."
Me, I can't get over youse across the Pond calling one of your top universities Noater Daym. Damn Yanks: learn how to speak French ;-)
Funnily enough, these days, because of English becoming a lingua franca (sic!) worldwide, it's evolving into many separate Englishes, some of which are barely comprehensible to us Brits. So feasibly a Brit could go abroad to, say, Malaysia in the not too distant future, have a native speak to her in a Malay version of English, and not understand what's being said. A bit like what's happened to Spanish - Argentinian Spanish sounds, to my amateur ears, to be a very, very different creature from Castilian Spanish, and may not be comprehensible to a Spaniard.
Aren't languages wonderful? :o)

Good for Friday

See...even your fingers wouldn't let you describe this song as 'divine'.
Yeah, John Squire is working it, but it don't sound like WORK!
