You know you talk so hip man,
You're twistin' my melon man (call the cops).
Hey rainmaker, come away from that man,
You know he's gonna take away your promised land,
Hey good lady, he just wants what you got you know,
He'll never stop until he's taken the lot.
He-he-hey, he-he-hey-hey.
Gonna stamp out your fire, he can change your desire,
Don't you know he can make you forget you're a man?
Gonna stamp out your fire, he can change your desire,
Don't you know he can make you forget you're a man, you're a man?
You're twistin' my melon man, you speak so hip.
Hey rainmaker, he got golden plans, I tell you,
You'll make a stranger in your own land,
Hey good lady, he got God on his side,
He got a double tongue you never think he would lie.
(oh he lied, ooh he's twistin' my melon man,
oh he lied, ooh he's twistin' my melon man)
Gonna stamp out your fire, he can change your desire,
Don't you know he can make you forget you're a man?
Gonna stamp out your fire, he can change your desire,
Don't you know he can make you forget you're the man (you're the man)?
He's gonna step on you again,
He's gonna step on you,
He's gonna step on you again,
He's gonna step on youuuuuuu.
Hey rainmaker, come away from that man,
You know he's gonna take away your promised land,

I'm so unhip I have no idea if my melon is twisted or not. Can anyone help?
I'd say the fact you've asked the question confirms twisting of the melon
i keep hearing something similar from George Michael's Freedom from back around the same time...anyone else know what i'm talking about? is it the piano?
Freedom Here -- the bassline & groove is similar.... (I like GM's Freedom better).
Brilliant album really. I wonder if dance rock is going to make a comeback soon, considering the prevalence of the 30 year cycle of pop culture.
What is this; a model of the Universe?

He's the guy who demands no repeated segues! For free!
Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer, Milli Vanilli and this.
One of the darkest periods of music in recent history.
It was entertainment, not theology. I enjoyed the ensuing drama more than the music.
chair dancing!
You Bet!!
Ahhhh, life when we were young ...
True, nice throwback. That said, looking at that cover induced instant migraine 30 years ago and still does today, lol

Way back when I was young, an ol' timer said this about a constant griper, "If someone hit that guy over the head with an axe, he'd probably complain that they struck him with the blunt side." Since I am now an ol' timer I get to use that line.
That's the problem when the threshold of membership is an email address.
This is the moment when even the white man starts dancing. Welcome to Manchester.
Leonard Cohen?
Let's change it!
I'm sorry to say i changed such that it will drop.
Just not that excited about this song. It's not bad or anything, it's just not that great.

I remember this song co-written by and performed by John Kongos in 1971 under the title "He's Gonna Step on You Again".
It was very popular with DJ's in discos as a "floor filler" to motivate the reluctant teenagers who could not dance when sober - like me
This cover version is at least as good as the original version and I suppose it had the same effect almost 30 year later.
Really? It looks like a pretty straightforward version of "you're blowing my mind".
Melon = head
Twisting = confounding
Really, fred, all you need are some cool shades and a vague hand gesture:
Alles klar, Herr Kommissar?

(Just a quick post-script - the cover art for the "Screamadelica" album was done by the label's in-house artist, Paul Cannell, who was allegedly inspired by a damp water spot he'd seen on the Creation Records offices ceiling after taking LSD - I'm sure it helped many people enjoy the record)

Stone Roses and T Rex.
Same time period.
Then I listened to several versions (Happy Mondays, Def Leppard, Party Boys).
John Kongo's original is exactly that: an unheard of concept, a UFO of a song - in the best sense of the words. Almost experimental.
I'd give the Party Boys kudos for the nice energy of their cover... the others aren't bringing anything new to the table, in my opinion.
Nope: John Kongos from South Africa wrote and recorded the original, back in the 70s.

Hey, cool, the cover art of the band name there is in Katakana...
Talkin' so hip, mon, ya breakin' my mind!
They may be complaining about The Way of The World, the brainwashing bullshit and all, but I like the message: slyly protest & abide.
THAT WAS WORSE then terrible
Just curious - is a Hippostar like a Hipster but with a greater love of doughnuts?
...and which hangs around in semi-tropical rivers...

Likes this groove.
I'm sure that with a few more listens, this song will grow on me like a fungus. No - I like it. I just haven't mastered the whole figuring-it-out part yet. (Like that line from "A Fish Called Wanda": "Monkeys can read Shakespeare - they just don't understand it!")
Miss you so much, Cynaera...
this song is marvelous... love it...
(edit) I see I posted the same thing once before....Ooops.
Fun yes, but it also strips some of the thought and majesty from it. Music that simply is good without having depth often has a shelf life more like milk than twinkies. Do you really think that people will be looking back in 20 years at all the classics that came out from Maroon 5 or Justin Beiber? Nope, for the vast majority of the listening public, those acts will have been long forgotten.
Pop music is like a cigarette. It makes you feel good for a short time, but always leaves you a short time later and rarely in a better place than you were before.
Music with depth is like a great memory. Every time you hear it, it washes you in the bliss of the moment and transports you to a better place and time. The best part is that often the first time you hear it, you don't really understand it. Instead, it takes repeated listens to really appreciate the artistry and magic of the song. It's like looking for a pretty shell on the beach and instead finding an old friend. Pop music could never offer that kind of reward for me.
I know what you mean and I largely agree, but "depth" is a relative and subjective determination. Many people are probably transported "to a better place and time" by songs which others may consider shallow or (*gasp*) "pop" songs. "Shelf life" of music doesn't really matter to me, and it can only be measured long after the work's creation; it's an indulgence in nostalgia, which is fine, but it's not a necessity for me. A song can just be a "good" song, that one enjoys hearing - every tune does not have to be some spiritual or "majestic" experience. Throughout human history, music has often been composed and played as something pleasurable, an escape - usually something to dance to.
Saw them in 2009. Still like little kids–temper tantrums, pissy, petulant attitudes. No girl would bang these fat, old washed up former musicians.
