I've been tried and I've been tested
I was born tired, I never got arrested
Harder than marble stone
I'm better off, better off left alone

'Cause I'm not the one
No, I'm not the one
You wanted it all
But I'll give you none
'Cause I'm not the one

Well like a toy to a kid
I said jump and mama you did
And you know, your daddy knows and your mama knows that's wrong
So now it's time for me to move on

'Cause I'm not the one
No, I'm not the one
You wanted it all
But I give you, give you none
'Cause I'm not the one

No
No I'm not the one

No
No I'm not the one

You think that I'm normal
All these years, I'm just tryin' to warn you
You'd do good to move on
No it won't, it won't hurt me none

'Cause I'm not the one
No, I'm not the one
You wanted it all
But I give you, give you none
'Cause I'm not the one
No, I'm not the one, yeah

I'm not the one
Not the one for you
Not the one, the one
Not the one

I do like the Black Keys, but I also wish Danger Mouse knew how to set his levels to keep from distorting the bass and just completely crushing all the life out of the song.  You hear that here, you hear it on Broken Bells, you hear it on pretty much everything he touches.  Kinda makes you think he means to do it that way.  Kinda makes you wish someone would let him know it sounds like shit.

It's not about levels. Too-high levels on digital gear lead to hard clipping, which is not what's happening here. This is a deliberate effect, via either digital effects plugins or outboard analog gear, that aims to emulate the sound of old analog recordings & vinyl records, by recreating the specific types of distortion that gear produced. It's an artistic choice.

I agree that it sounds like shit, at least when overdone. I'd love to unload on DM some time about that Michael Kiwanuka record...

7 years later, I finally listen to Bettye Lavette's version, and I love it!  Thanks CathStewart94!

Good to know, I thought it was my amp as have been tube rolling.
Thank you.

I've got an album by The Arcs which is pretty much unlistenable in one go.  Grim production values, to my ears.

Surprisingly little to dislike about this particular song by TBK. That stodgy production isn't completely absent, but it's not horrible.

I like goopy!

I'm not sure if it's (just) Danger Mouse; it seems like you hear that distorted/muffled bass and drums on most things Dan Auerbach touches as well.  It's clearly done on purpose; for some reason they both seem to like that sound.

These guys lost all my respect by how they handled Steve Miller's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  The Black Keys acted like a couple of spoiled brats.  Go into obscurity, losers.
still sucks big-time

Before, yes.  Tonight, no.

One of my favourite bands
I like this band, Dan Auerbachs voice, the pure sound on this song, everything. Great band!
We'll done, but depressing subject matter.

No, but they do play the same artists several times per day. Porcupine Tree, My Morning Jacket, Talking Heads etc. Not complaining, just saying. Well, maybe complaining about Talking Heads, but otherwise - carry on.
I like BK, but I LOVE this version by Betty LaVette.  She feels my pain, and I feel hers. . . . .

Hey, lots of folks like this (7.5 rating overall). Seems to me that not everyone must like every song. So you might want to exercise your right to use the mute button when this comes around again.

Bought several! They're all good. :) My favorite is El Camino, with this as a close second.
another nice modern rock band!

I love this song and the band; however, I saw them at Madison Square Garden in NYC this past Spring and I was pretty disappointed.  There is no denying their talent and their energy, but they put on a pop show- rushing through songs and except for a few moments not doing any great jamming.  They need to improve their live shows before I am truly won over.

This doesn't seem like the sort of band that The Garden would suit very well; they're essentially a 'garage' duo.  The Beacon would seem a more fitting venue for these guys, if not someplace smaller.

Saw these guys last weekend in Charlotte, NC (with the Arctic Monkeys). Excellent show, DEFINITELY worth checking out if they play at a town close by.

I'm surprised that the several songs I've heard from this album (all on RP, to be sure) have been "keepers" as far as I'm concerned. Surprised because I didn't know this was a group I'd bother to investigate. Having heard several of the songs, this is an album I consider buying - and through the RP affiliate link, of course! {#Mrgreen}

If you have not already, do it!  It's a fantastic album if you like what you've heard so far.
OMG, great song!!! Speaks to me sooo much.

Great pre-break-up song..  One of the best on this release.

{#Roflol} I liked the novelty of this song the first few times, but I'm rather tired of it now.  Thanks, Jelani, for the comedic relief.

I'm sure others could expand upon and dispute the line between these dots, but I submit this as DNA evidence. Stingray, I realize that there was no legitimate music recorded before 1990, when artists spontaneously began creating without influence - but humor me, okay?

What I don't see is the connection between Otis Redding and AC/DC.  Am I missing something?  I have Otis Redding on vinyl and CD.  Did AC/DC possess any sort of funk, and I just didn't hear it?  Could be my bias against those screechy white guy vocalists from the 70's.  I was never a big Zeppelin fan, either.  Loved the Stones, who had some funk, and loved Graham Parker, who had funk and a horn section.  Anyway, I just don't get the  connection from AC/DC to Otis Redding.

And, I like the Black Keys more than the White Stripes, but I can't figure out why.

reminds me a little of Cold War Kids. Nice.

BEST ALBUM - 2010!

What with November here (where has this year gone!) I started thinking about my "best of" list for the year. This album will definitely be in the top two or three for me. Absolutely love it.
He may not be the one, but this song is the one! {#Yes}{#Notworthy}{#Hearteyes}
Okay these guys are good and original.  A nine...I was curious enough to look up the album and was impressed.  If they sound like somebodies else, it's too far away from me to matter.  {#High-five}

These guys mimic styles and genres all over the map. I could rarely tell, from different album listens, that they were the black keys. Might've well been cruising through XM, covering different decades. Having said that, they're very, very good at it.
Uh.  Ya sure sound like the one to me.
Oh yeah...  Gonna see these guys tonight in OakTown!
{#Yes}
This band keeps growing on me everyday! Goooood Stuff!

First heard the Black Keys here on RP. But only recently they caught my attention, great GREAT band!!
And it probably has been said a million times here, but the cover is very original, cool!

These guys are really rubbing me the right way. Got to grab some of their albums.

Can't beat PIL with "Album/Cassette/Compact Disc/Poster" aka the generic label.
Is this song about what Neo was told by the oracle?
I've got my tickets to see these guys.
Lookin' forward to it!

Awaiting my oral exams on tuesday - the lirics fit right into my situation - I've been tried and I've been tested/I was born tired, I never was rested... Like Bill is reading my mind...

This is the sound of the 70s no? It really sounds like that!

I am starting to like this band.  Surprised to see they've had a few albums before this one, I've only started hearing them this year.

EDIT:  6 —-> 7    think I may need to consider picking up this album!

Best cut off the new album IMHO. I've been a long time fan and it's great to finally hear TBK on RP! (thanks for the submission jkamm14)
This album turned me into a Black Keys fan.
s'ok

I love the Black Keys.  This one is particularly nasty.  Nice to hear something new by them!

Just listened to this album for the first time. Excellent. I look forward to hearing it few more times. This song in particular kind of stuck with me.
