Let's commence to coordinate our sights
get them square to rights
get them square to rights
condescend to calm this riot in your mind
find yourself in time
find yourself in time
and i am waiting, should i be waiting?
and i am wanting, should be wanting?
when all around me, when all around me
document the world inside your skin
the tenor of your shins
the timbre of your limbs
now commence
to kick each brick apart
to center on your heart
starting with your heart, bright heart.
and i am waiting, should i be waiting?
and i am wanting, should i be wanting?
when all around me, when all around me
when all around me, when all around me
when all around me.
and i am waiting, should i be waiting?
and i am wanting, should i be wanting?
and i am hopeful, should i be hopeful?
when all around me, when all around me.
is the sunlight
is the shadows
is the quiet
is the work
is the beating heart
is the ocean
is the boys
is you,
my sweet love
my sweet love
o my love
and the light bright light
and the light bright light
bright light
bright light
it's all around me
it's all around me
Its all around around me.
It's all around me
All around me
get them square to rights
get them square to rights
condescend to calm this riot in your mind
find yourself in time

One of my best RP discoveries. Thanks
One of my roommates in college loved the Decemberists. Always thought they were from the UK or something. Kinda lame to have a fake accent when you're from Montana/Oregon. Also, my old roommate tried killing his parents so it gives me the heebie jeebies.
I like very much.
The guy has a creative writing degree. No wonder we have damsels and tigers... and great love songs!

Ja, any time I must listen, I'm thinking what his mother might have said in his waldorf days:" Jessup, would you please take the washcloth out"?
Hey what's up with the fakey European accent?

his voice and their songs have sincerity, longing and a little bit a grit which is more than I can say for a lot of nonsense I see rated ridiculously well here. . . . typical

"Vowel-Twisting Vocalist Dude" is a good name for a band or maybe a professional wrestler. The song does improve as it goes on. I tend to like their musical arrangements and their lyrics are usually clever and well-thought-out, but Colin Meloy's vocal stylings often sound so 'thespian' and contrived to me. Sometimes it seems like he's auditioning for an Elizabethan minstrel gig or something.
Why do so many posts bring up singing styles as hanging on, or extending "vowels", when "syllables" is obviously what they mean?
..because vowels are easier to tweek and hold? Most consonants are distinct, but syllables can be managed/mangled quite well, certainly.
Not a lecture...
I am one of the odd ones that like Meloy's voice...thespian fits!

I must be an alien, i just love his voice. And Dylan, and Young. But besides that, i wonder why some people can't hear or appreciate the beautiful arrangements, superb songwriting, the poignant lyrics. Really folks? Is it all about the Voice?
It's not "all about the voice", but the "voice" is generally the major part of just about any song which has lyrics and vocals. If one component of a song seems distracting or unpleasant it can be difficult to appreciate the other aspects.

Totally agree. This album grew on me with each successive listen. Very strong album for them none-the-less. It's a group that has grown on me just like their albums... nobody out there sounds anything like them. A class of their own.
this album (like all my favorite albums) was a slow grower for me.. Not as good as their two previous albumns, but still really, really good once i figured out that tracks 2 and 3 are skippers.
While i understand why people don't like Colin Malloy's voice the songwriting, musicianship, and production are top-notch

They sure beat listening to U2 all day.

Without question, Decemberists are an acquired taste. Love em' or hate em', they have a unique sound and feel. Malloy is a pretty adept showman, too.

Some folks here can't wait to diss the singing voices of Young and Dylan. "God awful." "Whining."
This guy is my Young and Dylan. It makes me sneer. I appreciate The Decemberists artistry. It's worth listening to and encouraging. But that voice... Is it sun loit? Is the o-shun?
Is it for real?

Yikes. Lots of vitriol flowing 'round here.
I'm not blown away by it but seems like a nice tune at first blush.

REO Speenwagon lives!!!!
I agree, I just can't get over the guys voice. It grates.
AND the PSD button isn't working.
It's just tiring to listen to - the guy's working it way too hard. Not good.
Oh good, a new Decemberists song to mark as a one.

The Decemberists are quickly joining the ranks of those artists whose ear grating presses my PSDs. Hey, Arcade Fire, Radiohead and Gotye, say howdy to this vowel-twisting vocalist dude and his bandmates.
This track does get better as it progresses, though. imho. just sayin.

Blech!
I wish there was a zero rating. I've had enough of this, uh, "vocalist" to last a lifetime.
