The day you came
Naked, afraid
Young mother screams and pushes you
The day you came
Oh joy begin
Weak little thing
More precious there'll be nothing, no
Oh joy begin
Let's not forget these early days
Remember we begin the same
We lose our way in fear and pain
Oh joy begin
First just one step
One word and then
With laughter sing, oh life begin
First just one step
Let's not forget these early days
Remembering we began the same
We lose our way in fear and pain
Oh joy begin
Innocent kiss
Black magic bliss
First broken bone
Sudden and swift
Oh innocence
Let's not forget these early days
Remember we begin the same
We lose our way in fear and pain
Oh joy begin

I like this!
Always a fan. Yes I get the either you do or don't. Many memories of the earliest stuff. I love Carter on , he is absolutely amazing, I think I heard someone ask him, "why don't you play a drum solo in concert?" And he said, "Because I am doing one every song we play!" I like everything they do. Thanks to RP I am hearing later stuff that I am not familiar with, like this one. Keep it up Bill.
Love Dave…
The joy begins when this dreadful dirge ends.
Yet another track I would never have discovered on my own. Wonderful.
Kings of leon inspired?? Hahahaha - jesus you people are bloody hilarious.
lovely kings of Leon inspired intro

I just love how Bill & Rebecca keep playing DMB given zero f**** to what trolls think
Just upped it to nine. The wine did it!

BillG pissing off the haters this morning!!! Love it!!!!

I really like DMB! But, this is not one of their best tunes.

That's a neat trick for a song that's listed at 3:57 long.

I understand not liking a piece. Maybe there are more dislikes than likes, by a large margin, for me at least. But why do so many of my fellow RP listeners trash musicians so much? These people are doing their best with the skills they have, and succeeding at some level. If you personally don't like, this is easy to understand, but vitriol I don't get.
The drummer is a "killer"
Carter BEAUFORD so good
DMB Free! Agree. Would add Counting Hooties

Wow. At first I didn't realize it was DMB. Caught my ear, but I'm not sure if it was cool, intriguing or annoying. It's an acquired taste, and I need to hear it again. Samurai Cop?
It's annoying.
Would be more interesting if there was some rhythm to the vocal line instead of straight half notes...

funny, I find DM's music gets tedious but think this tune is rather good!
Man, does this ever get tedious after the 4th minute. There's so little that's interesting musically in this song to move it along. The words suggest it should have been a balad or something with strings. Instead it's as if he really wants to make a statement, a kind of Bruce Springsteen meets Sting meets The Who meets Pearl Jam MANIFESTO, but the lyrics aren't there for that.
You know, I'd like it more without DM's voice. Wish Chris Whitley were her to interpret
Carter Beauford is a bad ass or as Miles would have said, a MF. That was the highest compliment a musician could get from Davis. Great drumming.
Say what you will about Dave Matthews but his band is tight.

For me an outstanding song from their last year album. We saw DMB on the Come tomorrow-tour in Germany two times in march 2019 in Hamburg und Berlin. Really excellent! We hope that DMB will become as famous in Europe as they are in the States (in Germany/Europe the band is still an "insider-tip").
Bla bla bla... so forgettable and over the top.
Satan was on hand when someone told DM he had a voice people would want to hear. Those who like his voice baffle me to the waffle house.
As if Dave's style wasn't unique and special enough, enter Carter Beauford, –wow!
I think they've been listening to Kings of Leon.
Never understood how DMB got a record deal. A sign of how bad music is now, especially late 90s, early 2000s....

The drums are cool on this, as is the overall production, but I can't figure out why Matthews is employing that unsyncopated, single-note, staccato singing style throughout the song. It's all one-syllable phrases with little or no stresses or rhythmic changes. It detracts from the song for me - sounding like someone banging out notes on a piano at fixed intervals, using one finger. I guess he had his reasons - creating tension or something; he seems to enjoy trying different approaches to music.
Very good drummer

why this one from all of DMB?
i like this song a lot better without the band
i always get a xmas song vibe from this one... it's a half hate/half like thing.

I'd have to agree. Not much of an lyricist, but he out did himself on this one.
Best DMB I've heard in years... Still just a 7, but far less depressing than his past 2 or 3 albums

Horrible song from a boring band
Sorry, this sounds like an endless sick up. I have to move on when it comes on. Don’t care what the words are; I can’t listen.

The first "7" I have ever given Dave Matthews Band. Good song...really stupid title.

Not one of his best
The raw version of this is so much better. I wish DMB would work with Lanois or someone like that so they didn't bury themselves in production.

I think this is the third time I've heard RP play Dave Matthews in the past 24 hours
Oh pain, please end.
Luv dave, seen him 15-20 times in some of my best concert experiences
this song, not so much....
DMB used to be very cutting edge, really interesting chords and beats, but this is SO incredibly marginal, it smacks of money grab. Kind of like how Sting and Peter Gabriel charge $150 a ticket to their concerts yet compose such pedestrian music nowadays, you know they're just trying to support their comfortable lifestyle.
This song just stinks!!!
The live performance of this song on DMB's current tour was spectacular because of the set design. That probably improves my rating of the song, because I can't separate the tune from the imagery.

So joy begins with the following song, I get it.
That's odd, didn't we just hear this a day or two ago? Oh, it's a "new" release, that explains it.
The Sharon Van Etten approach to "singing."

As Dave is now telling it on satellite radio: Really bad movies are a guilty pleasure and he considers Samurai Cop to be one of his favorite such movies. The movie was on in the background while he was writing the song, hence the name.

Honestly, people either love* or hate the guy (and his band), but this is decent. It has a Kings Of Leon vibe to it (which is good and bad).
* My wife is a HUGE fan. We saw them 2 years ago and they put on a great show (and they played this song, though I have no recollection of it).
