I get where you're coming from, and I typically expect more depth in lyrics too. And yet to me, it works here. The repeating of 'I can't take my mind off of you' speaks to obsession, as in you try to think of something else, but you can't.  Coupled with the desperation/emotion in his voice, and how he varies how he says it each time, I gotta admit it tugs at me.

The album is interesting to listen to. After several listens, I've started to think that the songs are excellent but the interpretations/performances/production aren't to my liking. Kinda like how I like Emmylou Harris doing covers of Lucinda Williams songs better than Lucinda herself. I'm not sure who I'd tap to do Damien Rice covers.
