Down among the reeds and rushes
A baby boy was found
His eyes as clear as centuries
His silky hair was brown

Never been lonely
Never been lied to
Never had to scuffle in fear
Nothing denied to
Born at the instant
The church bells chime
And the whole world whispering
Born at the right time

Me and my buddies we are travelling people
We like to go down to restaurant row
Spend those Euro-dollars
All the way from Washington to Tokyo
I see them in the airport lounge
Upon their mother's breast
They follow me with open eyes
Their uninvited guest

Never been lonely
Never been lied to
Never had to scuffle in fear
Nothing denied to
Born at the instant
The church bells chime
And the whole world whispering
Born at the right time

Too many people on the bus from the airport
Too many holes in the crust of the earth
The planet groans
Every time it registers another birth

But among the reeds and rushes
A baby girl was found
Her eyes as clear as centuries
Her silky hair was brown

Never been lonely
Never been lied to
Never had to scuffle in fear
Nothing denied to
Born at the instant
The church bells chime
And the whole world whispering
Born at the right time

Nothing comes from nothing: everything is derivative.

Piss off with the cliche "cultural appropriation" bullshit. Every culture shares something. We borrow, adopt, learn from other cultures. That's the way the planet works. Take your self-righteousness (or perceived) elsewhere.

As always, opinions vary.

I think Paul Simon would be first in line to quash that desire. He's repeatedly said he doesn't want to be stuck in the past (although he's done a lot of S&G reunion tours. Hope it's for more than just the money). Would you want to be chained to stuff you did 40 years ago? And Paul's written some brilliant stuff since '75.

I don't blame him for not wanting to be stuck in the past, and I think the original comment about him revoking the rights to his later material is silly. However, every time I hear his solo material, I can't help but think about how great he used to be, and how bland his music has become. Sure, this song isn't bad, maybe even pleasant, but it's not even in the same league as his S&G material.
World Peace is a wonderful thing

This song (and much of Rhythm of the Saints) is always a treat.

What's amazing and unusual about this version is that he's performing in front of several hundred thousand people, but it's actually a gentler and more intimate arrangement than on the album. He's just taking his time and savouring the melody and it works.

I think Rhythm of the Saints gets lost in the shadow of Graceland. It's a somewhat more introspective, mellow record so maybe that's why?
Not sure but I've always preferred it to Graceland.
Thank You RP  : )

(I agree with the sentiment having heard awesome music live, or on dingee little radios and now on my computer because of you folks)
Nice song. Cover looks like Trump's inauguration crowd.... in his fevered fat orange head, LOL! {#Tongue}
This comes along, and then I remember, then I realize: THIS is quality musicianship, THIS is unbridled genius, THIS is a REAL song!

YES! Agree with your observation about the arrangement and pace. Have always loved this song, and Rhythm of the Saints in general. And maybe I'm biased, but I do feel Mr. Simon was "born at the right time"... and on the right date, too. Because we share a birthday, which was yesterday. {#Cheesygrin}

Feel free, of course.  But why post that?  It's meaningless clutter.  No one cares that you hate this song.

He should be glad that he wasn't born under a bad sign.  {#Wave}

10 10 X ten
Played at the right time!
A great thing w paul simon you can track his evolution pretty damn clearly and still love his garfunkelest beginnings & that considerable loss to now when he don't need no body but the whole world singing along with him
What a genius and plus would have been a hella bookmaker as well

My fondest (musical) desire is that Paul Simon revokes the playing rights to all of his songs after 1975.
Um, and maybe that Janis Joplin gets to sing another concert, but that's just crazy.

Everybody in my church loves this song...

Beautiful
One of the few live songs where I prefer the audience screaming to the artist's singing. Yeah, I know, you hadda be there, but I wasn't. In gigs like this, I wonder what roadies do with all the knickers that are thrown on the stage?
Let me guess, yesterday was a bit o' hell, today is a bit of heaven theme? The Xavier Rudd song a couple back was incredible.
Love this! Thanks for this lineup (three fabulous tunes —  live versions — in a row)...superb!

I couln't disagree more. That's not to say that his pre-'75 stuff is bad. It's great too, but he's created so much amazing stuff (including this beautiful song) in his career that he should have a galaxy, or at least a solar system, named after him.

Lucky to have lived in the era of Mr. Simon's genius.

Pure genius.  The classics are out this morning.  Cure, Paul Simon and now the beuna vista social club.  No complaints from me.

To his credit, Art Garfunkel is still touring.  This is a beautiful song, BTW.

I forgot I knew this song. It's beautiful.

Paul Simon has really lost his "punk edge".

Very funny!

His (et. al.) performance of "Cool, Cool River" at this concert is amazing.  Worth the price of admission for that song alone.
Wow! I can understand people have differing music taste... but really? vomit inducing?

Is it because you don't like the Simon without the Garfunkel?  (I'm not really a fan of old Art, but his stock rose when he appeared in Flight of the Conchords)

Is this song about "overpopulation"?

Paul Simon's "You're the one" album rocks. If you like Simon and don't have the album, check it out!
so bland it sticks to the loudspeakers

This is actually from the Concert in the Park, August '91. If you're looking to buy this track, don't be looking for the original featured on the boxed set shown... get this show! It's truly one of the greatest performances of all time -- an astoundingly tight performance start to finish.
It's a good album but I find the "live" recording a bit too finessed. Still, it makes for a nice greatest-hits type album. This song is just beautiful in any incarnation.
Amazing sound, depth, and dynamics for a live recording.
