Blackmore and Lord dualling it out in the studio or on stage was a glorious thing.

Any radio station playing anything from the Machine Head album needs to be taken serioously.

ONE OF THOSE SONGS where my buddy Mike and I would be stretched out in bean-bag chairs after high school, passing the joint and looking up at the black light posters and solar-system-mobile on his ceiling, with this thing CRANKED so loud the speakers bucked and burbled with each jam-Hammond- and bass-note, and then his mom would pull up in the driveway and we wouldn't even hear... In fact, we wouldn't hear anything but this song until she would kick-slam open the door to his room and scream at the top of her lungs, TURN THAT CRAP DOWN! I COULD HEAR IT COMING UP THE STREET! and not a word about the weed, mind you! and Mike would mumble something until she left us alone, then he'd grumble and grouse how she had such a knack for ruining such a great jam and then finally we'd get up and go out to one of our cars and try to recapture some kind of buzz... One of Deep Purple's finest jams!

What a great description!

Pretty good, but the drummer was lacking. Missed all the detail from the original and phoned it in. Hey, man, the toms are there for a reason.
Landreth is one of those guitarists you recognise after the first 5 notes. Such a distinct style all his own.

Incredible player
Godlike. Guitar skill.

Well, maybe Greg Allman.
Ah, Machine Head.

Early 70's, my big brother and I shared a bedroom in Brooklyn. He had an 8 track / turn table quad stereo that I was forbidden to touch.

On those rare occasions that he left his room I disobeyed and risked a beating.

Thankfully, I was never caught in the act.

Machine Head was always my first choice, followed by Workingman's Dead and Dark Side of the Moon.

More than that was usually too risky, and I didn't find ELP  worth the risk.

Whar about Steve Winwood?
Burning in a freshly rebuilt amplifier and I really want to crank this to the stars, but my wife has gone up to bed and it would be cruel... but it really, really needs to be LOUD.
Few songs rattle my furniture quite like this one...

I would hazard a guess that what Greyerwrit meant was "the last nail in the coffin of the idea that DP is to be sneered at," thanks to hearing and recognizing the incalculable awesomeness of this track.

Thank you for this link!  NICE!!!

(Would still like to hear Kenny Wayne Shepherd, or maybe Sonny Landreth, take a crack at this timeless gem.)
Wow,.

I just yelled "Freakin  A" at my neighbors.  I couldn't control myself.
I think the phrase 'Freakin A" was created for this song.

You would call into your locally owned FM radio station and yell "Freakin A" when they played this song.

John Lord kicks ass on the Hammond organ!!!  John Lord & Keith Emerson are the 2 best Hammond Organ players in rock!!! ...Different styles, but BOTH are GREAT!!!

My first LP... and my first "lid"... from my sister, for my birthday (she was pretty cool)... Good 'Lumbo buzz... blacklights/posters... alone in my bedroom.. hoping mom doesn't show up (although, she's not really my mom...) Why I'm still alive is a wonder.

I think Jon Lord, the keyboardist, was trained as a classical organ player.  His training kind of set DP up to stand above the crowd in terms of composition even in a metal jam band.

you see...

this is a 4th of july song

all about freedom and energy

thats what this music been about for 70 years
The 5.1 version will blow you away. Sounds like they are playing live in your house.
I normally get bored with a lot of the classic rock tunes but always enjoy hearing this one for some reason.  Thanks for playing this instead of Smoke on the Water.
Ok time to test these speakers... Turn it up, make em sweat!
A rare 10 for me-it's all there, Blackmore plays so cleanly and creatively, and the interplay with the Jon, Lord of the B3- priceless.  Roger is steady on the bass, it is well sung, well arranged, simply ageless.
Yikes!

It's...it's...it's... rock n roll.

Where have you been?
If I were in a successful rock band and I heard this song for the first time, I would probably feel the need to go back to school and learn more bout music.
Blackmore and Lord = magic.
I am sure I've never heard this before. Wow. Just, wow.
c.
it's about my neighbours who are busy only in a kitchen...

Ahhhhh.

One of the best RnR songs from the 70s.

For all you poor, lost souls born too late....this song was one of thousands that were played on radio, albums, 8 tracks, and cassettes.

It was truly a  "grand buffet" of great songs.

Today...well it's a food court in a a convienece  store.
You can practically smell the weed coming out of your speakers listening to this.

(not a complaint)

First stadium concert I ever attended in Mpls.  back  in 72' (?). Deep Purple Machine Head Tour - opening  act was some British blues band  named Fleetwood Mac. Opened up a whole new world  for me and a lot of others that night!
As good as it got for straight ahead rock, early 70's. This was the opening set list tune for a high energy cover band I had the good fortune to be involved with (Bass) circa 2001.

I miss Jon Lord. His keyboard work was unique in the rock world.
As a teenager listing to this album I never appreciated this tune.  Was a little to slow to get going for my liking. But as an old guy I'm diggin it.
A gentle(!) reminder of the genius that was Jon Lord. Peerless performance.

No 'Made in Japan' cuts on RP?

I never like Live Albums.

Made in Japan is the rare exception.  It is what a live album should be: Start a song, Jam for a long time, Finish a song....

That intro is stunning, mesmerizing.  It could last all night and I wouldn't care.  Machine head, the first Rock and Roll album I bought at age 12, just a little junior high girl.

Egads!

This song is 46 years old and their keyboard-guitar jamming is still jaw dropping!

The depressing thought: there is no band from the last 20-25? years that will even try this!

What happened to RnR?
One of the great rock anthems that never got enough accolades.  Just the keyboards is way above fantastic.
Yeah! I always love the way Garth Hudson opens Chest Fever! Um...no..wait...

apparently not...

‘Lazy’ is pure blues-boogie, dominated by organ effects. The placement is simple and emulates a live performance in focus. Organ opens centre, then is placed right, and guitar sits left, yet then the guitar moves to centre for a solo, then the organ re-takes the centre for another solo. When they play together they’re panned guitar (L) and organ (R.)
rtrt, thanks for pointing that out. I must have had my left and right channels the wrong way around so I swapped them over and Richie Blackmore's guitar is coming out the left speaker and Jon Lord's organ is on the right speaker now.

Yeah!
To me 7 - Quite Likeable
To me right now a 7 - Quite Likeable  but a very weak 7 thinking about 5 ..
Yeah I remember this, great blues boogie.  I like the recordings that shift and pan instruments ,  not done much lately but that was the magic of the "new" stereo systems and recording. Think Cheech and Chong, "Oh Wow man!" don't Bogart on me man..
Insanely good, 11!
Never was a Deep Purple fan, of course, I only heard what was overplayed on the radio.  This was pretty enjoyable.  Thanks RP.

I was born too late to enjoy many of the "classic" rock stars as they came out, and while I haven't yet delved into the Deep Purple catalog, I was very impressed by their RocknRoll HoF induction speeches and performance.  Not that I really care about the RnR HoF typically, although I was happy to see SMB and NWA inducted that year; the highlight for me was Ice Cube's speech about how Rap, while not a traditional form of music, does have a lot of the same "question authority" mentality as regular Rock stars, and at least on that count, NWA did push the music industry in ways never done before.

I'm not sure what my point was here, maybe knowing I had a 7+ min track to be lazy while listening to got me off track.  I've rated this sucker at a 9....and to all of you who were around in 1972 and blazing the Js and cracking the tabs on some brewskis and hauling ass in your hot rods....here's to you for making it to 2017!  Long Live RP!!
