...once they got their supply they had already set up an amazingingly efficient process based on state guidelines (A1, A2, B1, B2 etc like most states). I didn't have to call for an appointment, UC Health notified me that I would automatically be on the list & that they would notify me when my time came. I did get the notice with a link to schedule my appointment for the first shot, which was Saturday. They automatically scheduled my second shot 3 weeks after the first. When I arrived they were giving the shots in an auditorium. They guided me into the line for a 30 second check-in, then directed me inside to one of the many people giving the shots. They said CDC says you don't have to wait around after but that I could sit in the auditorium seats for 15 minutes or so, which I did.
That is how it should have been handled on a national level. We should have been ready for this months ago.
Even that elaborate system, well executed, requires some administrative overhead that will ultimately impede progress. Once they're seeing a sufficient supply of vaccine, they need to drop it and move out to neighborhoods and workplaces in vans and just stick anyone who asks. Keep a record if they have ID but don't worry if they don't. I can get a flu shot without any folderol if I want to, this should be the same.

A lot of people make calls like this every day. They look at their circumstances and how others are getting on and say "gee, I should be able to do that even though the rules say otherwise".
I would suggest you are applying deductive reasoning to a chaotic situation.
With very few exceptions, people are getting their vaccines through a system of registration. If you want it to be merit-based and not access based, you're going to need another system.
As a general statement, I think most would agree that all 1A's should get their shots before 1B's...and so on. The practical reality is that's not possible. It should be managed better...but it isn't, and so here we are.
My wife is 1B, and cares for her 89 YO father who is 1A yet can't get scheduled (no idea why...just that days have been spent in pursuit without any appointments until May). Should she not get a vaccine offered to her in favor of letting everyone in 1A get theirs? Yes, if only that were true. The reality is that 1Ber's are going to swallow up the appointment before deserving 1A's get it. So who is at risk...my 1A father-in-law and the rest of my wife's family.
Should my wife feel bad that 1A's can't get vaccinated? No, she didn't create the process. Should she feel bad that someone no more deserving than her might get the shot she had access to if she had declined...while putting her family at risk? Hell no.
If you want to preserve all of the vaccines possible for more deserving folks....then don't get one...but don't blame others who use the system to get vaccinated for taking theirs when they can.
When you talk about Karma, I find it interesting that many of the states "doing best" at immunization also ignored masking and distancing guidance. Why the need for vaccines if it's not dangerous? Those situations are pure politics over logic. The Dakota's should have to wait for everyone else to get vaccinated first...that would be Karma.
I think you misunderstand my position. I agree that the system is broken and everyone is making personal choices. I also highly agree with you that people who made light of the problem and advocated against masks and distance mandates (including a good portion of our congress) should be at the back of the line. If it wasn't against public health advice, I would actually advocate restricting their access to the vaccine completely.

Didn't drag anyone in to get this done. Was the boss' idea. I said sure let's give it a go. The worst they can do is say no. The boss was there for her own shot as was another co worker. We are a team. Been there nearly 25 years this May, other than a short stint during my initial cancer diagnosis and treatment. In my journey to get our shots, I've been asking how other non hospital staff front line workers have been getting their shots and they said only by way of connections and pure luck. If you work for one of our three hospital chains, it was easy. Not an employee ? Fend for yourself, as I did.
So if you were in my shoes ... you don't love and care for your wife enough to do the same for her as I did for mine ?
We all make judgment calls every day. There is a risk/reward calculation and everyone has a bit of moral flexibility depending on the circumstance. I get why you are doing it, but no, it's not the call I would make. I think we are nearing a point where vaccines will be more widely available, and there are a lot of 1A people who are still not able to get shots. Most people are able to stay safe with reasonable actions. But hey, it's your call, and your karma. I do get how you made the call, but I believe within a short timeframe it will be proven unnecessary, and therefor not worth the effort/risk/karma.
A lot of people make calls like this every day. They look at their circumstances and how others are getting on and say "gee, I should be able to do that even though the rules say otherwise". Some speed a bit, some drive without insurance, some fudge their taxes, some cross a border to feed their family or provide opportunity for their children. Every one of those people is making a choice based on circumstance and a risk/reward calculation. Some are less justified than your line jumping reasons, some are more. Maybe this is something that will cross your mind next time you are ranting about the filthy illegals, but I doubt it.
As noted below, both the wife and I are legal just due to age. I am actually in the 1 A group as a front line medical worker whether you three like it or not. We both have qualifying medical conditions in addition to the age thingy. It only makes sense to get vaccinated together, right ? No cutting in line. Just using my smarts and not being stupid.
so then why the need to lie and drag someone else in to falsely verify your fraudulent story?
I'm actually happy you are getting the shot. If our .gov hadn't politicized and completely botched the response to a pandemic, we might all be able to get the vaccine as well as have much lower risk due to a more controlled rate of infection.

Off shortly to get our first Moderna shots today from the county health department I work in being a 1 A front line medical worker after many attempts of trying to get an appointment anywhere within 50 miles. The county I live in has nothing going.
We're rolling the dice with the wife and hopefully she will get one just by being the spouse of a front line worker. The boss is going to say that she is our receptionist. She's also taking in her medical records just in case to bolster the justification.
We're both over 65 as well. We'll see ...
So you are going to lie, and involve others in the deception so that you can skip ahead in the line. Your politics makes more sense every day. I know several legitimate 1A workers here who can't get the shot due to lack of availability. I wonder how many people skipped ahead in front of them?
+1
Comes with the VIP heritage...
Not the least bit surprised. But hey, if scamming the system floats your boat, go for it, right? Why wait your turn like the other suckers & losers out there?
Nice, all three of you in one tidy package.

Now as for someone who did cut in line just because of who he is the spouse of and for no other qualifying reasons at the time of his vaccination, where is your collective outrage over that ?
Not only that but he then has the nerve to present the most outrageous display of ungratefulness and contempt I have run across anywhere lately.

It's fucking unconscionable how vaccination against a deadly disease is a goddam lottery in this country. FUCK capitalism. FUCK Trump.
Not only did he win the "lottery", he then condemns everything that allowed him to win. Disgusting, imo.
I'm sure that he had to be dragged kicking and screaming against his will in an effort to not be caught taking undue advantage of an opportunity that was dropped in his lap. Virtue signaling and all that, right ?
So what do any of you three have to say about that, since you missed it 2 days earlier in this thread ?
Probably nothing, because, he's cool. He's one of your's ...
Oh, yeah, we did get our shots. Thanks for the well wishes ...

according to the sate of ohio you're both qualified by age alone
bonus points if you have medical conditions (haven't you both had cancer?)

Justine and I are "Tier 1b" (she works in schools, I'm a "first responder" because of the Ski Patrol thing) and so we were on for getting our shots last month... but then I got the 'rona and had to postpone. So today we got 'em... and while we were there, put Augusta on the standby list in case they had some no-shows. It was very busy despite subzero temps, but they did call and say "if you can get here..." so 3 out of 4 of us got our Pfizers. The 16 year old doesn't qualify...
If you have already had the C-19 virus, what is to be gained by having a vaccine shot? Will your body not have produced sufficient anti-bodies?
it's recommended by health dept to get the vaccine anyway. I think the vaccine will cover more strains.
This is why I went as soon as I could after not feeling any symptoms. You're covered by your natural immunity for at least 3 months, then it seems to fade somewhat, but I wanted some anti-Brazilian capabilities too. WARNING side effects were brutal; the county health doc said if I got the shot while I was still feeling symptoms, it could be bad. 3 weeks later wasn't long enough, I guess.

glad you both are doing better
as i understand it, the coding for the spike protein is two to four times larger in size than similar spike proteins
trying to remember...1kb versus 4kb i think which makes for many more epitopes (or place to attack/attach etc)
over time the vaccines create/develop a soup or slurry of antibodies to address the multiple epitopes
iirc according to florian kramer, some other data could suggest that pre-infected people may only need one shot of vax to get the desired effect/response
I'm getting my first COVID-19 vaccine shot tomorrow morning
Really organized. In & out in 15 minutes. Second shot scheduled in 3 weeks.
Other than my arm being a bit sore, the only side effects from the vaccine were all the muscles in my arms, legs etc felt really tired as if I'd done a workout. Somewhat better this morning.
i'm glad you got this man
i haven't back scrolled but is this the pfizer or moderna shot?
⢠HCQ is effective for COVID-19. The probability that an ineffective treatment generated results as positive as the 203 studies to date is estimated to be 1 in 11 quadrillion (p = 0.000000000000000089). ⢠Early treatment is most successful, with 100% of studies reporting a positive effect and an estimated reduction of 66% in the effect measured (death, hospitalization, etc.) using a random effects meta-analysis, RR 0.34 <0.27-0.44>. ⢠91% of Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) for early, PrEP, or PEP treatment report positive effects, the probability of this happening for an ineffective treatment is 0.0059. ⢠There is evidence of bias towards publishing negative results. 88% of prospective studies report positive effects, and only 76% of retrospective studies do. ⢠Studies from North America are 3.6 times more likely to report negative results than studies from the rest of the world combined, p = 0.00000029.
