I have been saying all along that people are waaaaay over analyzing this guy.  He is basically Tony Soprano and just like most successful, ambitious Urban New Yorker assholes, dime a dozen.  And yes, I used to live in South Florida too so I know.

I imagine he picked up on his father's belief in promoting real estate projects and winning PR battles. My guess is that Trump sees life as a "me vs. the world" conflict and believes that he can wear people down simply by yelling louder, never conceding, always seeking to "win" transactions, etc. He's probably always lived in a bubble that reinforced his mindset of superiority. There's probably also a biochemical element of manic depression, although one of his biographers said that he didn't think Trump suffered the depressive side of that disease. The biographer also said that Trump thrives on chaos, which may mean that the frenetic, chaotic feel of the first weeks of the Trump administration may stay with us for as long as Trump does.

This obsession of his should have pushed voters away from him in the early primaries. I think a lot of people were so fed up with the mannequin qualities of the establishment candidates (Jeb!) that they were glad to have someone like Trump who loudly called BS on the whole show, and just ignored his endless bragging as a campaign swagger and bombast.

But I think it's going to accelerate his downfall. The press has already figured out that you can easily bait Trump into over-reacting; now that he's in a position of responsibility, he can't sit back and simply find fault with the actions and words of others. I think the public will eventually just laugh at Trump. It's very hard to succeed politically when voters just see you as an incapable chump (see Jimmy Carter).

Maybe there is no single point. Just a fertile environment (family, business, etc.)

I understand your exasperation. But what are you going to replace it with? If you have no viable alternative, and by viable I mean truly viable that everyone buys into, not just something you personally think is viable, then I suggest you stick with the devil you know. In my opinion a two party system is prone to wild swings every now and again, though it can also get things done faster. New Zealand went through a very similar phase in the 1980s.. we had a National Party (= Republican) government, an economy that was tanking, a policy of unbridled Keynesianism (Think Big) involving massive public debt and large infrastructure projects, divisive internal policies (support for the SA apartheid regime), etc..  sound familiar?  The country went to the brink of civil war. Families got torn apart. The rift between the extremes could hardly be bridged anymore.

Once he got voted out one of the first things that got changed was the introduction of proportionate representation to prevent the same thing happening again.

The US seems to be undergoing a similar crisis of belief in its core values.. the question is why? Why are so many  people so ready to go to such extremes?
