Running across the frozen lake
Hunters are out on his trail
All odds are against him
With a family to provide for
The one thing he must keep alive
Will the wolf survive
Drifting by the roadside
Climbs each storm and aging face
Wants to make some morning's fate
Losing to the range war
He's got two strong legs to guide him
Two strong arms keep him alive
Will the wolf survive
Standing in the pouring rain
All alone in a world that's changed
Running scared, now forced to hide
In a land where he once stood with pride
But he'll find his way by the morning light
Sounds across the nation
Coming from your hearts and minds
Battered drums and old guitars
Singing songs of passion
It's the truth that they all look for
The one thing they must keep alive
Will the wolf survive
Will the wolf survive
1983, reconnecting with a college friend in a Westport bar/restaurant near the UCLA campus having mimosas or screwdrivers, lazy Sunday afternoon cocktails.
We've been seated in an elevated area in the front window and the band is immediately below us on the other side of an iron railing, not five feet away. I could have reached out and tapped the back of the drummer's head. I've never heard anything like these guys and their musicianship is simply outstanding. Never got their name and I was bummed we had to leave kinda early because of a longish drive home.
1984, "How Will the Wolf Survive" is released. It's THEM, the guys playing in the bar!!! I immediately bought the album, and subsequently multple others.
Great story!
I would agree with you if the R&R Hall of Fame had more of a legitimate purpose or public mandate. It's essentially a profit-making, private country club, run by (non-musicians) Jann Wenner and Dave Marsh.
Well put.

Cranking this loud, and to hell with the neighbors. My all-time favorite song by Los Lobos (and I love most of their stuff, so this says a lot.)
Shutting up - gotta listen now.
My fav is their cover of B. Goodman's "In The Mood."
...and that's very nice : >
WHAT? Ignorant and stupid, what a combo
sounds nothing like Traffic to me
When you listen to their version of Mr. Fantasy you can't help hearing the similarity between the vocals and that's a compliment when you're talking about Steve Winwood.
sounds nothing like Traffic to me
He still takes a seat at the drums for a while every show.
And these guys, THE PRIDE OF ROCKFORD, are also getting no love in Cleveland.

If there's room for KISS & Rush, there's gotta be room for Cheap Trick.

Quite frankly, the vocals do evoke Steve Winwood.
Sort of Winwood meets Elvis Costello channeling Buddy Holley?
Heck, I've always enjoyed hearing it.
Now that's funny...
As the "youngsters" write on texts these days:
bwahahahaha!

Puras pendejadas. Ain't no faux in anything Los Lobos does. Never has been, never will.
v nice indeed 7>>>>>>> 8yes, indeede do

In it, David Hidalgo stated that label-mate Dave Alvin of The Blasters challenged him to write a "band anthem" for Los Lobos shortly after their debut EP came out on Slash records..
I think he succeeded with this effort.
Need this live music to get me off balance so I can stay in balance.
Along the literal line...Minnesota now has two wolf hunting seasons....The DNR says it's not "endangered" anymore. Many people disagree.
I think most of us got that.
Thanks for posting the lyrics, though - this song is more metaphorical than literal. Still, I like to think it parallels the plight of the literal wolf of today - in danger of extinction because of mankind's uncaring attitude about anything but wealth and power. Whatever the case, I just love the heck out of it. As of today June 14. 2012, the GREAT state of Idaho have butchered half the population of grey wolves in the state. So meat eaters eat up!

Considering this is their most-famous original tune and pretty much represents the band to a "T" (and is still one of their best songs), how can you dump on it & still like the band?
And that's all I'm sayin' about it - except that this song by Los Lobos is one of the few songs that can rally me up and make me remember why I'm alive. You got a problem with that?

I'm cranking this up again. Love it so much, I'd give it a twenty if the rating bar went that high. This is the perfect song for driving across the vast Nevada desert in the dead of summer with all the windows down.

Shutting up - gotta listen now.

I have this on my MP3 player, and I invariably hit the "repeat" button, because I love it. Los Lobos isn't my favorite group, but this song just resonates for me.
Thanks, Bill and Rebecca!
And to those who criticize, yes, the vocals are shrill. It's just his voice. Try to look past it and get the message.Agreed!!!
Thanks, RP!
Then I saw them in old Cleveland Stadium, opening for U2. Wonder if any of the 80,000 knew who they were?

A 1, on principle!
Where have all the haters gone?
Long time flaming
Where have all the haters gone?
Long time below...
With apologies to Pete Seeger.

I remember how excited I was when this came out, as I was working in a crappy record store, selling Van Halen tapes. Gee, what fun.
But then we started getting into the underground LA scene, which was starting to go mainstream thanks to a distribution deal w/Warner Brothers. I pretty much liked everything on the Slash label:

couldn't have said it better myself.

any particular Traffic song that this sounds like?
sounds nothing like Traffic to me
9 years later but: Los Lobos are big fans of Traffic and do a marathon cover of Dear Mr. Fantasy plus other Traffic songs in their live shows. That the sound would bleed into their originals is unsurprising.
