I got my finger on the trigger but I don't know who to trust
When I look into your eyes, there's just devils and dust
We're a long, long way from home, Bobbie, home's a long, long way from us
I feel a dirty wind blowing devils and dust
I got God on my side and I'm just trying to survive
What if what you do to survive kills the things you love?
Fear's a powerful thing, baby, it can turn your heart black, you can trust
It'll take your God-filled soul and fill it with devils and dust
Well I dreamed of you last night in a field of blood and stone
The blood began to dry, the smell began to rise
Well I dreamed of you last night, Bobbie, in a field of mud and bone
Your blood began to dry and the smell began to rise
We've got God on our side, we're just trying to survive
What if what you do to survive kills the things you love?
Fear's a powerful thing, it'll turn your heart black, you can trust
It'll take your God-filled soul, fill it with devils and dust
It'll take your God-filled soul, fill it with devils and dust
Now every woman and every man, they wanna take a righteous stand
Find the love that God wills and the faith that He commands
I've got my finger on the trigger and tonight faith just ain't enough
When I look inside my heart there's just devils and dust
Well I've got God on my side and I'm just trying to survive
What if what you do to survive kills the things you love?
Fear's a dangerous thing, it can turn your heart black, you can trust
It'll take your God filled soul, fill it with devils and dust
Yeah, it'll take your God-filled soul, fill it with devils and dust

What did "W" know about combat or war? He was a draft evading drunk (not all bad unless you want to be president) Talk about disingenuous posers!!

Bruce has the right to sing anything he wants. It still doesn't mitigate the fact that he's a pretentious ass with a fake midwestern accent.
What evidence do you have in support of that position? Yeah, that's what I thought.
The man exudes integrity.
As for this song, and your complaints about it, artists often channel what they perceive to be the thoughts and voices of others. That is what art is all about --conveying message and emotion.

This album has stayed in the rotation for the last 6 months. Had some glorious summer nights on the back deck, drinking with friends and listening to this album. Ah, summer in Chico!

I don't like Bruce's politics, but this is a great song, and he has every right to sing it. And I say this as a Marine Corps veteran, by the way.

I'm not complaining.
I'm complaining. Bruce has always bored me.

I am glad Bill played Rosalita this morning. Sometimes I need reminded that Bruce can rock (or at least could). I do like this song though.
Since Bruce's return with The Rising I've been monstrously impressed with his work. Not since Nebraska have I heard such depth and investment in his craft. If you fell away from Bruce in the 80's, it might be time to give him another chance.

You can tell that the wingnut crowd has not forgiven bruce for supporting kerry last year. These are the same folks that still believe that WMD are in Iraq, but have not been found yet.
Yeah, right. Losers.
Never been a big fan of Bruce, but I gotta say this album is growing on me.
From a 2 to a 1, Lord helps us plaeeeeze!

Never have been a big Bruce fan, BUT I like the subtleness and quiet of this new album. And you criticizers....get a life. Bruce is Bruce. Why do we CARE if he is a poseur, or a millionaire, or an asshole? Nobody seems to remember, the guy is a MUSICIAN first and foremost. Everything else is beside the point. If you don't care for his music, fine. If you do, great. Stop picking his personal life apart.
I'd only add that I bet most of us would not withstand the same scrutiny of our personal lives, motives, values, etc.
I have never had doubts about Bruce Springsteen's integrity. Never.
A little heavy on the rotation for this one.

What is wrong with a Steve Earle album sung by Bruce Springsteen?
Betcha RP won't play "Reno" from this same CD
damn, this is good stuff.

I suppose Garth Brooks could answer my question...
He fronted a band called Steel Mill in Richmond just before Asurbury Park hit, maybe some of the southern experience rubbed off.
AAARRRRR! I hate this song. I was hoping you would never play it again. Is the MAN greasing you up and making you play this crap?

We need all o' them we can get. I love this stuff.

Wow... just, Wow!

Let me guess; he's just another Bob Dylan, right?

No..."sup wit dat" is just included for goofiness factor.
And I suppose I wouldn't quite know whether it was an Asbury Parkism anyway, since I didn't grow up there...it was quite dodgy when I was a kid, and even up until a few years ago...
But good point about Fogerty...

Bruce does get old fast.
I like Bruce but his later stuff stinks and this song is no exception. This song is crap-ola. It's suppose to have an anti war message in it? Ok, where is it? The song is Boooooooring, and lacks real spirit and says nothing.
This reminds me of the excellent (and underrated) "The Ghost of Tom Joad" album. It's a good song and I look forward to hearing the new album...
I have a friend who hates Springsteen with a passion, and I still can't understand why. She seems to share the same sentiments of those below -- thinking he's some kind of "poseur" making believe he's a working-class guy when he's really a rich rock star. Yet it's common knowledge that he's really committed himself to a number of causes, and doesn't just pay them lip service. The guy has obviously always poured his entire being into his performances -- you have to mop his sweat off the floor. So why this vitriolic attitude toward him and not toward all the other obvious phonies out there? Beats me. I guess it's true, no good deed goes unpunished...
AHHH AHHHA AHHHHHHH HELP!
"gag and choke" as my children said when they were little!
Make it stopÂ…it burns!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
Devils & Dust is pure crap. I hate this new song. Irritating moaning. No soul, no heart, Where the %*#@ is the melody?!? Come on Bruce can do better. Delete this one from your play list!
thanks rp
i've heard this twice and you've convinced me that i wanna run out and buy this today and add this to my bruce collection!
think he needs patti's vocals on this track though!
Love the boss!
Ain't it great when an artist ages with true grace and style?

Emerson's quote about a foolish consistency goes double for people who demand some notion of authenticity above and beyond not being fake. You don't have to be from Nebraska to name your album that. God forbid Bon Jovi and Bruce somehow both represent "New Jersey-ness." Gee Conor Oberst is from Omaha, I guess Bright Eyes is THE authentic Nebraska sound. If it truly takes one to know one, if only empathy, and not sympathy, is legitimate, then you're arguing for indentity, not diversity. Good luck in your utopia of purity.
Couldn't have said it better... 'Nuff said

One of the best live acts there is...can't wait for the acoustic tour. The people with beefs about this track probably don't know anything about Springsteen or any of his songs that weren't on the Greatest Hits Album.

Agree on all counts.
heard this yesterday. not a bad thing, though.

why doesn't he write about what he knows, like how hard it is to keep his mansion clean and the 'grounds' well manicured. Or how good he feels when he treats the help real kindly and all. . .and where the hell did his midwestern accent come from. . .midwest Jersey?
it seems to me maybe ur not well acquainted with the boss. As he is singing about what he knows.

i am not a BRUCE fan (never was), but he has made some great music. some i can do without, but some is most awesome!!!! give credit where it is due. and its possible it ain't true about his mansions etc.....he owns an organic farm in NJ, helps out in asbury park and a local theatre near his town.
don't kid yourself about where mick jagger, bob dylan, joni mitchell, eric clapton, george harrsion and the like live. not in a 2 bedroom home please!!!!!!!!

Am really looking forward to this album.
Nebraska and Ghost of Tom Joad were the only
Springsteen albums that did anything for me
since Darkness.
Ok, I heard this was some new "anti war" anthem Bruce created...but I don't get it at all. Bruce is a superb talent no doubt but this is weak, and what the hell is it about? Someone explain this awful song to me.
I start it out as a 7. Need to hear it a few more times to judge if it's any better than that. Springsteen is one of the few who does both ends of the rock/folk spectrum well.
It's OK. I'll take Jungleland and Born To Run.
The worst harp player in the business.

Add "Because the Night" from Winterland or any other 1978 show to that list and I am right there with you.
Great to have the stripped-down Bruce (ala Nebraska) back.
Stipped down has ultimately been the best-Bruce over the past two decades.
But then listen to "Prove It All Night" and "Point Blank" off of the Winterland '78 bootleg. Great to have the stripped-down Bruce (ala Nebraska) back.
