Baby's playing dead in cellar
Gave her water just got paler
Grass stains back burns
She's a screamer
She's just dusted, leave her

If you see her, don't upset her
Never seems to get much better
Grass stains back burns
She's a screamer
She's just dusted, leave her

Her hmm, hmm, goes to your heart
Her hmm, hmm sticks in your head
Her hmm, hmm, hmm, hmmm

Baby's playing dead in cellar
Gave her water
Just got paler
Grass stains, back burns
She's a screamer
She's just dusted, leave her

I think the drummer is pretty good.

Has a distinct sound. Plays off the guitars pretty well.
"She's just Justin Beiber"?? Couldn't get it out of my head, so had to sing it out loud with correct lyric. All good now... whew!
Aboslutely love Belly! There is an acoustic version of this song that is amazing too
Absolutely wonderful song. I don't know if I'm a bit biased because I love horror books/films so these dark lyrics appeal to me - but I don't think that's why I love it! The singer has an ethereal quality that juxtaposes so deliciously with the grungy guitar and morbid lyrics. Certainly one of my favourites - thank you for keeping it in the rotation!
just fecking noise...with pretty vocals...boring...

Indeed.  I heard this in a record shop in Old Town off Wells in Chicago.  The counterman aptly described the guitar style as "jangly" and it's been in periodic rotation ever since.

i think i've been there!
Bloody good.  No pun intended.

Clearly you are to blame.
Good tune! I never heard of Belly until RP! ...Thanx RP!

Saw the Stop Making Sense movie in the University of Victoria's on campus theatre, the Cinecenta.
Coming from a small town, with little to no TH on local radio play, this was an awakening. Loved how DB started off the gig with just a guitar and boombox, and everyone wheels on as opening song proceeds. Director Jonathan Demme did amazing things with DB.

Caught RockyHorrorPictureShow later that year, same place, mind blown again.

Seems like they're around again.

Me too, I was about to post about how good this album is!
Sort of creepy / dark lyrics but a groovy tune nevertheless.

I like this tune. I had never heard of Belly until recently, on RP.

Love this album.  And copying it on to the phone for use in the car.  Been way too long on this one.
Shades of The Heart Throbs here, circa 1989.
Is this song the lyrical cousin of Nirvana's "Polly"?
One of my favorite albums from the nineties. Saw them at RCKNDY in Seattle at the time and was completely blown away.

Not the best song on the album - but still gets an 8 from me...

The album as whole (if we could vote on albums) would get a 10 - there aren't many albums that I've listened to over and over and yet still haven't tired of.  This is one, Catherine Wheel's "Chrome" is another.

Sounds like she's singing about Justin Bieber?

Agreed!  Love hearing Tanya's voice anytime... {#Cool}
Genius segue from Cloud Cult. BillG does it again.
Love this album.  Like teenage candy.
Great tune.  A simple structure, but killer vocal rhythms.  I wouldn't say that Tanya is off key... it's her vocal style.  I'm really not getting the negative comments towards this tune.

Well, the "1" bit is right.  That's all it gets from me.

Interesting... if you do this deliberately, it's going to make "A Day in the Life" sound awfully tinny...
Great album.

I saw them at Cornell University quite a few years ago. They played a song with Catherine Wheel, which I didn't like then, and have't acquired a taste for yet. The opening gig, however, was one sweet and largely unknown girl, then, named... Jewel. I quite like Belly, and some of Tanya's later work. However, that day at the concert, the truth of the matter is that what really surprised me and blew me away was Jewel's performance. She was warm, friendly, intimate and as at ease with the audience as if she were ntertaining a group of her buddies in her living room. Tanya, on the other hand, I found rather aloof and a tad pretentious. I haven't looked at any figures that could determine who became a more recognized pop star in the following year, Jewel or Tanya...
What a horrifyingly grim song. I love it!

of all belly songs, to me, this one sounds the most like it could have been a throwing muses song.

Actually, they broke up after their second CD (undeservedly) flopped both critically and commercially. Tanya Donnelly went solo and released three CDs so far.
Great to hear a deeper track from this super band. A lot of individual talent circulated around this band!

That transition from Iron and Wine almost put me through the windshield!!
Nice song! Thanks jah_blessed
My upload! Hopefully it gets played soon. Saw them live years ago. I think they opened their set with this song. It got me in the mood instantly. I was shaking for hours afterwards.
