That you're too young to go
There's no freedom to be found
Lying face up in the ground
Ashes from an unfinished life
Are all that's left
In a tear-drop-shaped locket
Hanging from his mother's chest
You whip the back of freedom
'till it bleeds an oil stream
Then you sail down upon it
In your killing machine
Old men who send children
Off to die in vain
They will hear death's constant whisper
Call remember my name
Gather 'round the stone
I wouldn't have thought this was the stone in question, surely the lyrics refer to gravestones generally and premature death and violent conflict. I understand Harper's antecedents are Afro/Native American and Jewish - he is a poster boy for mixing it up. On the matter of patterns and the curious but consistently entertaining sequences of music the like of which I have never enjoyed to the extent I have since tuning into RP: how is it done. Bill have you developed some sweet algorithm for rhythm?
Well it's a stone and they are a gathering around it
Because then he/she wouldn't get a chance to cry about it. It's all about the cryin'
Oh snap!
Of all the possible aspects of this recording to be annoyed (or "tortured") by, the chord progression seems to be an odd choice. It's a pretty traditional minor-key progression, probably used in hundreds of folk and gospel tunes.
if not thousands

It seems pretty obvious to me it's a warning to not join up.

Right on!
Ha! Ya - agreed!
Why not just click PSD instead while the rest of us enjoy Ben?
The answer is as follows: this is a comment board. If you want to enjoy the music: listen to it
If you want to enjoy the music: listen to it. If you want to be a crybaby: "this is a comment board". Some of us must defend the right to annoy at all costs.

But this is the first that I'd heard what happened to Excelsior, so your post was fascinating. Do you know this for sure? PhysicsGenius fits the description and likewise disappeared mysteriously...
I went back over Excelsior's comments, and although they aren't that offensive, they are relentlessly negative and he repeatedly uses the puking emoticon, which I can't stand. I agree with you about hate speech. I think one of the problems with free speech is that many people refuse to use it to stand up to intolerance. People should speak out about it but they clam up and refuse to get involved. This leaves the haters free to spout their bile. That's what makes censorship so enticing, it's easier to go that route that to debate the issue. I don't know if Horstman is a hater, I'd have to go over his comments and I haven't done that.
The Post from Bill G can be found on Page 4 of the comments for the song 'Lost Coastlines' by Okkervil River. I don't know what happened to Excelsior; whether he left on his own or Bill kicked him off (although Bill's such a nice guy, it's hard to picture him kicking a member out), it's a mystery. Excelsior didn't leave immediately after Bill's comment, he stuck around for a while. He did not make a comment after Oct 20th, 2008.
I like markoirl's theory of what happened to Excelsior - Bill captured Excelsior in October last year. After weeks of intensive "re-programming" released him using an abandoned shell user account, Romeotuma.
PS - As for this song...Not Bad - 7
I just stumbled on this in the wee hours of a sleepless night. The page number you refered to is now page 5.
Amazingly, Excelsior now has 1,357 songs rated a 1.
I'm not a fan of the DD, but sheesh. That's almost as many songs as I have rated total.
And more power to them
Ditto.
I still wonder why the producers felt they needed to tap him to appear in Standing In the Shadows of Motown.
What's the point of that? Without negative, there is no positive, and vice-versa.
No mountain - no valley.
It's the way of EXISTENCE.
How sad for you.

And nowhere is your excellent point more evident than the pages accompanying Porcupine Tree songs. Just try expressing the view there that the music is superficial or that Steven Wilson is a vapid windbag. The place will erupt with zealous attacks on your philistine tastes and demands that you find a new radio station.
I never demanded that you find a new radio station. I just argued with you over the total lack of common sense some people have with regards to where they live and how they live.
If you live in an area that is prone to flooding, either move your house to higher ground or accept the fact that your house may get washed away and you or your love ones might be injured or killed.
That's all. The problem you guys take from this is personal, like we're attacking you, your credibility and your views.
We're not. We just don't agree and we use this forum to express our opinions. Cause we all have em.
Try to break a smile . . . this is all really, really fun.
I'm not calling for censorship. What bothered me most about your comment was your use of the word welcome, a better word to use would have been tolerated. His comments were not welcome but they were tolerated.

Have a good day - you defender of free speech.
Well, I do defend free speech, including yours and *ugh* Horstman's. Interesting analogy to racist comments, though, and I guess you caught me speaking loosely when I said 'welcome,' so I accept your refinement. My own intolerance is not for politically incorrect speech (like racist remarks) so much as hate speech. That's why I don't accept Horst: he's a demonstrable hater of many things. But I'm a dauntless defender of his right to say whatever he wants to, subject, of course, to BillG's overriding policies.

To all RP posters, do you really want me, aka Horstman, to disappear? Is that the general consensus here or the rantings of one Mr. Nate917 who spews his gospel of all things proper RP etiquette?
It is funny how in one sentence he thinks people like me and Excelsior should be removed and in the next sentence he thinks our ideas are as welcome as anyone elses. Sounds pretty conflicted to me.
I've encountered many people like Nate who basically have a "my way or the highway" approach, and quite frankly I don't have the time to waste with such people.
But again, I ask as a matter of RP interest, should I stay or should I go now? And Nate, you needn't chime in, we all know your opinion(s)!
Feel free to send me private messages, I don't mind.
Yours respectively,
Horstman
Sod off, you pathetic hate-mongerer. I disagree with your hate, but I defend your right to express it. I'm sure that distinction is lost on you. ("yours respectively"?)
I find your attempt at organized censorship far more repugnant than any of Excelsior's drivel. I think many of us would like to see Excelsior, PhysicsGenius, and Horstman (to name but a few) disappear. But this is not a popularity contest, and Excelsior's unpopular ideas are just as welcome here as yours.
Oh, and this song is terrible.

Oh, by the way, Excelsior is an 11-year-old Asian girl from Columbus who's really good at getting your goat.
You're the one who's panties seem to be in a knot. As I said before, I'm not calling for censorship. What bothered me most about your comment was your use of the word welcome, a better word to use would have been tolerated. His comments were not welcome but they were tolerated. I would compare his posts to a racist's comments, which are often tolerated while at the same time despised and disputed.
His comments weren't the only issue, the following post is from Bill Goldsmith himself:
'A relentlessly negative RP member has discovered how to spot new tracks that have been added to the library, and has been passing out 1s to songs he hasn't even heard yet, based on his wide-ranging predjudices.'
If I see that happen even once more I'll probably start removing his ratings from the displays & calculations.'
Not long after Bill's comment (made on Sept 30th, 2008) Excelsior disappeared, he knew the jig was up. So the words and actions of this troll led to his downfall.
It wouldn't surprise me if Excelsior was an eleven year old, he/she had the mentality of a child.
Have a good day - you defender of free speech.
Don't try to re-write history, his ideas were not welcomed, they were despised! He was a toxic, poisonous, unwelcome troll.
So F'ing what. All you're pointing out is that you disagreed with him, as did a bunch of other people. I'm sorry trolls upset you so much, but this is a public forum, and it welcomes both the agreeable comments and the disagreeable ones. You want to be the arbiter of what's agreeable and exclude all that's not, and that's censorship. What if someone found your comments nasty? Should you be booted? Or do you pretty much get to say whatever you want here — just like Excelsior and everyone else?
Oh, by the way, Excelsior is an 11-year-old Asian girl from Columbus who's really good at getting your goat.
I didn't say he should be censored, but his ideas were certainly not welcome.
No they aren't, are you nuts??
The Canadian censors weigh in. It's different here. Really.

Oh, and this song is terrible.
Yup, he posted 5 almost identical comments to this song in two months. Just so we all know just exactly how he feels, and he didn't stop until someone responded to him. A troll, pure and simple, and as the old saying goes: don't feed the trolls. And yes, I'm guilty of that too, but you don't really expect to find trolls on a civilised site like this so tend to treat posters as decent people by default.
I wouldn't know Ben Harper from a hole in the ground, but I do like this song and the lyrics.
Or at least decrease its rotation. There are so many good songs we don't get to hear much of.......
yes!!! please!!!!!
Excelsior must not be listening today.

Alright then, I'll say it again too: unless you've actually met BenH and hung with him, you are making a baseless snap judgement that serves no good purpose.
I say Gather 'Round for more good tunes.
I don't know the guy personally, but I like this song.
ben harper, in general, is overplayed on RP.
i've said it before, and i shall say it again: something about ben harper strikes me that he is a total poseur.

I couldn't agree more. I've tried and tried to like this guy but it never quite happens. And this song has got to be one of his most annoying

Mr. Benjamin Chase "Ben" Harper it is those artists with talent but with humility and willingness to learn and explore new approach music which give a prominent place in this as competitive world of music;
and because nobody born taugh....

Or the Weather Channel, for that matter.
Really? I had no idea.
John Barleycorn was Traffic, dear.

Porcupine Tree is a waste of eartime but I only get slammed if I say it rudely. It is possible to make a post about not liking some song without being nasty.
Ben Harper's a rock-solid 6 for me. Even after
'till it bleeds an oil stream
Then you sail down upon it
In your killing machine"
Now that's a lyric.
