Long afloat on distant oceans
I did all my best to smile
'Til your singing eyes and fingers
Drew me loving to your isle

And you sang
Sail to me, sail to me
Let me enfold you
Here I am, here I am
Waiting to hold you

Did I dream? You dreamed about me
Were you hare when I was fox?
Now my foolish heart is leaning
Broken, lovelorn, on your rocks

For you sing, touch me not
Touch me not, come back tomorrow
Oh, my heart, oh, my heart
Shies from the sorrow

Here I am, here I am

I am puzzled as the newborn child
I am riddled at the tide
Should I stand amid the breakers?
Should I lie with death, my bride?

Hear me sing
Swim to me, swim to me
Let me enfold you
Here I am, here I am
Waiting to hold you

Here I am, here I am

I am puzzled as the newborn child
I am riddled at the tide
Should I stand amid the breakers?
Should I lie with death, my bride?

Hear me sing
Swim to me, swim to me
Let me enfold you
Here I am, here I am
Waiting to hold you

Brian Ferry soundling even more "lounge-singer" than usual?  No f'ing way.

yep.. he lost the plot along the way somewhere
Lovely, and just what was needed.

This song has been hunting me for some weeks now. It started with a cover by Finn Andrews from the Veils (Isolation Hour nr. 2). Then, my subconscious figured, I hear this song on Radio paradise all the time. This is one of its versions with so lovely voice of Bryan Ferry.

I have loved this Tim Buckley song for much of my life. I find Bryan Ferry's cover intricate and lovely; a true homage to the original.
I confess that the first time I heard it here, I was just irritated, and gave it a 5. I'm glad that I listen is more openly today!

An outstanding cover. (9)

Thank you, Bill and Rebecca, for continuing to broaden my musical appreciation, and thus enrich my life.
Ferry is still mumbling I miss the Ferry from the early Roxy Music days.
I've only just noticed that David Gilmour is noodling in the background on this one. That's worth an extra rating point!

Have you heard Pat Boone's version?  His version was the first one released.

He does kinda suck the magic out of the original (& This Mortal Coil's version) doesn't he?

Oh wow, this is totally unrecognizable. Saw the title and thought it was only a coincidence. Checked the lyrics, and well, I guess he did it his way.
Ferry's voice reminds me for some reason of Steve Winwood. Same kind of reedy quality I guess.

I wonder if they ever collaborated...

Tim Buckley would be better, much better. In fact, more Tim Buckley RP, please.
sure, why not?

Like the guitar on this. My favorite cover of this still Dead Can Dance's: https://youtu.be/DOTqU0BKE44

Silly ... derivative ... call it what you will, I think it sounds awfully good. {#Meditate}
I feel ferry's voice complements the feel to this, likeable :)

Agree that this sounds nicely retro...almost Bowie-like with Nile Rogers' guitar licks.  Nicely done Mr. Ferry.  You know your audience / market.

But back in the 80's it sounded like he stepped out of early 10's, wierd...

i really hope he has a "what the hell was i thinking?" moment whenever he hears this.
I can practically see the credits for a John Hughes movie rolling.
He still has that unmistakably smooth voice.

Can't. Take. This. Anymore.
Yep, and slowly mutating into a crooner on the strength of this one; Kate Moss has never looked so good mind

This Mortal Coil - Song To The Siren, "soft version", surely not the same thing ....

I'm with you snowcat. I love the lush sound of this song and the entire album. Ferry's like a painter, with every stroke he's adding new color...layer upon layer of brilliant musicianship...when he's finished he's created a work of art. Some might find it overproduced, but I wouldn't change a thing. I bet this sounds amazing on a high-end stereo.

I totally agree with every word !
Not overproduced,,just to perfection !

And yes it does..in 5.1,,he's in a league of his own !

I really love this version.  I listened to the album the other day and thought it was absolutely gorgeous.  Reminds me a lot of those shiny smooth sounds from the days of Avalon.

I like Bryan better when he doesn't take himself so seriously ("hard rain's gonna fall" for instance) but I can't give most of his other stuff less than a quite likeable. Maybe never higher, but not lower either.

No. That would be Paul McCartney's "Yesterday"
If so then Wikipedia is wrong. "Yesterday" has been covered 132 times, But Elenor Rigby has been covered 139 times. Elenor Rigby surpassed Yesterday within the last year.

Slick and classy. Simply stated...sounds like a continuation of Avalon. Not a bad thing at all. Great stuff!
Nice to see him back

I used to watch my father grade his students' English papers by looking at who wrote them and after grading them he would then actually read the papers and offer critique. Occasionally after reading them he would change the grade but if he did he wouldn't change it much.  In the same way I was ready to give this song a "5" before I even heard it because it's by Bryan Ferry.  After listening to it, I'm convinced that it is indeed a solid "5".

Me likes, but I have to admit the hot babe on the cover may have brought home a 1/2 point or so for BF.

What he said.  The version by This Mortal Coil makes me weep; this would barely pacify me during a short elevator ride.

ARRRRRRRRRRRGH! This album sucks! Make it stop!

This Mortal Coil definitely did the definitive version, which will probably never be surpassed. Buckley's original is pretty nice, too.

This version's got about as much real emotion as an amoeba. Not working for me...totally not working.  Still a 6 'cause it's Song to the Siren...
Good gawd- what a watered down version. I love the creepy depressing original. This is... elevator music. {#Snooty}
What a great version!  So good to hear the old Brian Ferry sound again.
thought this sounded familiar...not bad i suppose.
As much as I love Roxy's Avalon and most of Ferry's solo efforts, I still have not taken to this effort. Intend to give it uninterrupted listens over T'giving...

That's his accent.  I believe the technical term for it is "drama queen."  Cf. Morrissey.  Bowie's good at it, too.  I think it works as a cheap substitute for emotion when you've got only 3 minutes to get your point across.
